It’s Feature & Follow Friday time and this week it’s all about books with “winter” settings! …Which turned out being a bit more difficult for me to answer than I’d expected! This weekly meme is hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.com, and you can find all of the details in her most recent Feature & Follow post! But basically, people post in responses to a prompt every week, and then people vote on each others’ posts until the following Friday. The person with the most votes, is chosen as the next week’s feature!
And this week’s prompt is:
What is your favorite book set in a “winter” world?
And after considering this question, I realized that I really don’t read that many books which are set solely in winter. I do remember reading one about a winter cabin, and a woman who nurses a man back to health…whom she’s told is her fiance, but his face is bandaged, and he’s actually not, but then she falls in love with him…(what a great run-on sentence). But I cannot remember the name of it for the life of me. And the only other book which I can think of that was mostly set in winter (I think) is…
…Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. And I swear I did not think of this book because it is one of my most recent reads. I seriously do not read enough wintery books. It appears that some changes to my reading habits must be made!
Anyway, the feel of Ravka (the country in which most of the action takes place) reminds me of the upper class version of old / Tsar Russia, which then in turn also reminds me of one of my favourite childhood movies, Anastasia!
The snow contrasting with the gold, jewels, the beauty and richness of the architecture and the upper class people are just incomparable for me. I also enjoyed the mystery which tends to enshroud the Romanov family, a sense of mystery which I also felt surround some of the characters in Shadow and Bone!
I would have loved if this book, and in fact this entire series, had been set in winter! And now I really want it to snow here because I don’t have any wintery/snowy books in my December TBR (except for maybe Ever the Hunted, though I’m not sure). And now I also really want to blare the Anastasia soundtrack, even though everyone in my house is sleeping (especially the song which is playing in the scene pictured above, “Once Upon a December”). It’ll be playing in my head as I fall asleep.

“The Secret History” by Donna Tartt is one my favorite books with a winter setting (Vermont). There is one chapter in particular where the protagonist rents a room in a “hippie warehouse” and literally almost freezes to death. She’s such an amazing stylist it makes me feel like I’m freezing to death when I read it. Here is a short sample from that passage:
“Suddenly, something that I can only describe as an icy blast swept over me, and I looked up. There was a large hole in the roof; I saw blue sky, a swift cloud moving from left to right, through the jagged black edge. Below it was a thin powdery dusting of snow, stenciled perfectly on the wooden floor in the shape of the hole above it, and undisturbed except for the sharp outline of a solitary footprint, my own.”

Omg, Anastasia was one of my favorites, too, and I did not realize just how much Shadow and Bone does fit that setting. Mind = blown. I read a lot of books with summer settings, apparently, since I can’t think of any winter ones either. Great thoughts!
That is a tough one. My first thought was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia).
I have (by some twist of fate) never read the Narnia books! Or I would have definitely listed that one!

Ohhh okay! I was going to say that the common theme seems to be that people read those first…but I was recommended to read the Grisha trilogy first haha. Hope you get to them both soon!
The book that immediately sprung to mind for “Winter” theme is The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Love the imagery of this one!!
