Note: This book is part of a series, and there are likely some spoilers in the synopsis below.

Two worlds are poised on the brink of a vicious war. By way of a staggering deception, Karou has taken control of the chimaera’s rebellion and is intent on steering its course away from dead-end vengeance. The future rests on her.

When the brutal angel emperor brings his army to the human world, Karou and Akiva are finally reunited – not in love, but in a tentative alliance against their common enemy. It is a twisted version of their long-ago dream, and they begin to hope that it might forge a way forward for their people. And, perhaps, for themselves.

But with even bigger threats on the horizon, are Karou and Akiva strong enough to stand among the gods and monsters?

The New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy comes to a stunning conclusion as – from the streets of Rome to the caves of the Kirin and beyond – humans, chimaera, and seraphim strive, love, and die in an epic theater that transcends good and evil, right and wrong, friend and enemy.

⤖ My Review ⬻

Welcome to my review for the third, and final, book in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series by Laini Taylor, Dreams of Gods & Monsters! If you haven’t read my reviews for books one and two, you can do so here: Daughter of Smoke & Bone Days of Blood & Starlight. And now back to Dreams of Gods & Monsters! I was dreading picking up this book, not because I thought it would be bad (having read my reviews for the other books in this series now, you will know that I love the world, the writing, the characters etc. etc.).

My concern was that, even though it’s a very thick book, that it would be so good that I would read it far too quickly and then be left feeling adrift…and that’s exactly what happened actually. Things really come to a head in Dreams of Gods & Monsters, and I could not put it down for the life of me.

A photograph of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone book series by Laini Taylor arrayed on a rustic, wooden shelf. Dreams of Gods and Monsters, the third and last book in the series, is displayed at the front of the arrangement.

Willpower? What’s that? Never heard of it. If I had to pick my favourite from Dreams of Gods & Monsters and Days of Blood & Starlight, I honestly don’t know if I would be able to choose! They were both so so so so so good, and I am still experiencing a book hangover, almost two months after reading the very last page of the last book in the series.

Laini Taylor is an incredible writer and storyteller, and I’m holding off on reading the two books in her Strange the Dreamer series because I don’t know if another book is coming out for that one, and I don’t know how easy to find her other books might be or if they’re as good as the Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Strange the Dreamer series are (does anyone know?)

In either case, I’m both happy and devastated that I have finished this series (and I’ve already read the Night of Cake & Puppets novella, so there is nothing left for me to devour! Woe is me). I highly recommend it and I also plan on reading Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer books this year (once I get over my fear of finishing those too, haha). This was an incredible and fantastic series!

  1. YES! I had such a bad book hangover after this trilogy was done, and I’d already read the Strange duology, so I’ve been feeling bereft for years now, and it’s just the worst. Strange is a duology, and I definitely recommend reading it soon! They’re not technically connected, but there’s definitely some room for the two stories to blend together, and it’s really cool imagining Karou and Sarai hanging out. Strange was what got me hooked on Taylor, too, and I absolutely devoured it, so prepare yourself for more wondrous magic!

    1. Omgggg bereft us such a good word choice!! And sounds like I need to read Strange the Dreamer ASAP! Have you read The Bone Season books at all? One of my good friends loves Taylor and loves The Bone Season series as well 🙂
