Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it.

Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things.

But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?

Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated.

Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

But what if they can’t quite nail a first date . . . or a second first date . . . or a third?

What if Arthur tries too hard to make it work . . . and Ben doesn’t try hard enough?

What if life really isn’t like a Broadway play?

But what if it is?

I was so excited to read What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera and it definitely did not let me down! I picked it up this past Monday night, wanting to read just a chapter so that I could get a feel for the book (and what I was getting myself into), and before I knew it, I’d gone and read 70 pages instead! Arthur and Ben’s narrative styles pulled me in right away because they were both funny in their own way, and they also felt real and relatable. What impressed me as well, was how distinct each of their voices was, and how the mood of the book would alter just a little, depending on who was narrating. (I also listened to parts of this book in audiobook format, and loved the narrators they selected for Arthur and Ben! They definitely sounded how I pictured them, and the audiobook was very very enjoyable to listen to!) And I’m glad that no one has asked me to pick a favourite yet, because I loved Ben and Arthur both equally (and adored the majority of their supporting cast as well)!

I was also happy with how big of a role the setting (New York, New York) had to play in the story, and was also impressed with how successfully Albertalli and Silvera depicted it in this book. I’ve read a number of books set in New York before, but I can’t say that I ever felt as if I was truly transported to the famous city before. That “New York feeling” definitely played a part in the romance between Arthur and Ben as well, and I absolutely loved that. The boys’ love story also wasn’t perfect (which made the story entirely theirs while also making it more fun to read about) and I rooted for their romance the entire time! I also wanted to make a note about the ending, but decided against it so as not to spoil things for you as they were mildly spoiled for me! I definitely recommend this book, and cannot wait to discuss it with others who have read it (and am definitely open to discussing the ending in private chat on Twitter or Instagram)!

    1. It definitely was hyped up! And I was a bit hesitant about requesting it at first for that reason, but I am glad that I requested and read it after all 🙂

      1. it’s a double-edged sword with those books! sometimes I’ll wilfully ignore them and then go back to read them later when expectations aren’t so high. otherwise there are books I’ve jumped on the bandwagon and then been all ‘meh’ on them, and I don’t know if it’s my expectations or the book at fault, lol

  1. Good to hear that you really liked it! I cannot wait to start it! (Also I’m happy to say that my copy is finally on it’s way!)
