Happy Tuesday! And I’m so glad that we all survived another Monday! This week’s prompt will cause me to make a top 10 list which is quite embarrassing for me, haha. So I am hoping that you won’t all judge me too harshly! I’m sure that most of us didn’t read as may books as we had set out to, or wanted to, in 2016!
For those of you who don’t know what Top Ten Tuesday is all about, here is a quote from The Broke and the Bookish, the genuises behind this weekly meme!
Each week we will post a new Top Ten list that one of our bloggers here at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Everyone is welcome to join. All we ask is that you link back to The Broke and the Bookish on your own Top Ten Tuesday post and, if you want to, add your name to the Linky widget on that day’s posts (typically put up midnight EST on Tuesday) so that everyone can check out other bloggers lists! If you don’t have a blog, just post your answers as a comment. Have fun with it! It’s a fun way to get to know your fellow bloggers.
Aaaaand this week’s prompt is:
Top Ten 2016 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn’t Get To (But TOTALLY plan to)
*SIGH* this is going to be extremely embarrassing. I can’t believe I didn’t get to these last year. They all sound so good! I guess you can only read so many books and still be able to work, and go to school, and eat, and function as a human should, etc. But anyway, here are my top 10 embarrassments…I mean books that I didn’t read in 2016, but definitely WILL read (hopefully THIS year)!
– ONE –
Hope Jahren’s Lab Girl
I know you guys are probably sick of seeing this one on my blog all the time, but I really really want to read it! It sounds very very good, but it’s been very expensive to purchase here in Canada, so I’ve kept waiting for the price to go down (because it was always taken out at the library too). And the days sort of went by, and now we’re in 2017. If you want to know why I need to read this book so bad, read this open letter by Hope Jahren to Millennial women, and you will understand!
“Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she’s studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant life—but it is also so much more. “
– TWO –
Emma Cline’s The Girls
I saw this book absolutely everywhere last year (and still kind of do this year). It sounds quite good, and different from what I normally read. I am also curious to see whether this book is popular because of a kind of fad, or whether there is some true quality to it.
Have any of you guys read it? What did you think?
“An indelible portrait of girls, the women they become, and that moment in life when everything can go horribly wrong—this stunning first novel is perfect for readers of Jeffrey Eugenides’s The Virgin Suicides and Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad.”
– THREE –
Nadia Hashimi’s The House Without Windows
I remember the cover of this book catching my eye first, and then the description, back when I had just started blogging and I didn’t really have that many followers. I requested it and never heard back *weep* I’m still really sad that that happened, because I really wanted to read this book!
“A vivid, unforgettable story of an unlikely sisterhood—an emotionally powerful and haunting story of friendship that illuminates the plight of women in a traditional culture, from the author of the bestselling The Pearl That Broke Its Shell and When the Moon Is Low.”
– FOUR –
Amy Schumer’s The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo
I absolutely ADORE this woman. She’s funny, doesn’t seem to care what others think of her, and I also like that she’s around the same size as I am (and obviously more confident about it than I will ever be!) I have liked Amy from the beginning of her career, and I remember hearing about this book long before it actually came out, and just…squealing with excitement. I really hope to read it this year!
“The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.”
– FIVE –
Ruta Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea
I remember writing a mini review for a sneak peek of this title back in April 2016, and it was so well-written and intriguing. I wanted to read it right away, but I was so overwhelmed by the many books that I wanted to read once I was done grad school, that it sort of…got buried. But this year. I promise I will read it, because I HAVE to!
“Inspired by the single greatest tragedy in maritime history, bestselling and award-winning author Ruta Sepetys (Between Shades of Gray) lifts the veil on a shockingly little-known casualty of World War II. An illuminating and life-affirming tale of heart and hope.”
– SIX –
Shari Lapena’s The Couple Next Door
People have been raving about this book (at least here in Canada) probably not only because it’s CanLit, but because it’s probably also very good! I really like mystery/thrillers, and in fact, for a good part of high school, it’s ALL that I read. I don’t read mystery/thrillers as much now, but this title has me very intrigued!
“The instant New York Times domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal and the secrets between husbands and wives. . . .”
– SEVEN –
Carrie Fisher’s The Princess Diarist
I saw this book some months back, in a catalog. I read a sample, and then immediately requested it, but sadly never heard back. Having grown up on Star Wars, and being a big fan of the first 3 films especially, I am very interested in this book. And I have to read it this year, especially with Carrie having passed recently; I want to honour her by reading at least ONE of her books. Rest in Peace Carrie Fisher <3
“The Princess Diarist is Carrie Fisher’s intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes on one of the most famous film sets of all time, the first Star Wars movie.”
– EIGHT –
Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows’ My Lady Jane
This book, I have heard mixed things about, but I tend to ignore the negative comments, and focus on the good…as well as the “in the tradition of The Princess Bride” part of the blurb! I love The Princess Bride (at least the film, as I still need to read the book), and I therefore think that this book would be very fun to read!
“The comical, fantastical, romantical, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey. In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.”
– NINE –
Alwyn Hamilton’s Rebel of the Sands
This book has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time, and I’m very disappointed in myself! I read and reviewed a sample back in April 2016 (the same bundle in which I found Salt to the Sea, mentioned above), and I was able to find the book used and at a very good price. I bought it and never read it. Maybe I can read it soon, on conjunction with the sequel, which is being released this March!
“This startlingly original Middle-East-meets-Wild-West fantasy reveals what happens when a dream deferred explodes—in the fires of rebellion, of romantic passion, and the all-consuming inferno of a girl finally embracing her power.”
– TEN –
Lauren Oliver’s Replica
I saw this book everywhere, near the end of 2016, and while at first I was not sure about it, like most other people I became increasingly more intrigued. I received this book for Christmas and therefore have it sitting on my shelf now, so no more excuses!
“From Lauren Oliver, New York Times bestselling author of Before I Fall and the Delirium trilogy, comes an epic, masterful novel that explores issues of individuality, identity, and humanity. Replica is a “flip book” that contains two narratives in one, and it is the first in a duology. Turn the book one way and read Lyra’s story; turn the book over and upside down and read Gemma’s story. The stories can be read separately, one after the other, or in alternating chapters.”
I very highly recommend reading Salt to the Sea 🙂 Ruta Sepetys is one of my favorite authors and none of her books have disappointed me. Replica and My Lady Jane easily could’ve made it onto my list this week, too. I could’ve made a MUCH longer list this week, haha.
Hahaha I think many of us could have made much longer lists! And yes I really look forward to reading all of those! As well as Sepetys’ other work!
There is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. To begin with, if this were not a common problem for book lovers, would it even be a question posed to bloggers for discussion? Also, think of how many books you did read (and review). Finally, how would you feel if you had read all of the books you wanted to read? No extras sitting out there to entice you. Gawk!
You make some very good points! And I feel much better now 🙂 thank you!
Haha great list! I definitely meant to read “The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo” and “The House Without Windows”
Thanks! And I hope we both get to them this year 😛
Thank you for reading and commenting! 😀
I have to read The Princess Diarist and The Girls too: it’s ny birthday in a few weeks so I’ve asked for both.
I loved Rebel of the Sands; at least by reading it a year late you can go straight for the second in the series if you like it. I have preordered it but probably forgotten everything in Rebel!
I really want to read Replica too! It sounds so awesome! I hope you get to all of these!
Krystianna @ Downright Dystopian
I’ve heard The Girls is amazing. I hope you get to read it soon!
My TTT.
Me too! And thank you! I’ll be sure to check your TTT post out!!!
I definitely plan on reading My Lady Jane and Rebel of the Seas! I just don’t know why I haven’t yet hahaha
Great choices, overall 🙂
I really hope I get to read Carrie Fisher’s book! Great list, happy reading!
I hope we both do! Thanks for reading and commenting! 😀
Great review! I’m reading My Lady Jane now and I think it’s cute! 🙂
Awe that’s great to hear! And thanks so much for reading and leaving a comment! 😀
I read The Girls last year and had mixed feelings – some little snippets of the writing were great, but overall the book felt a little bit of a disappointment for me!
I’m also really keen to read The Girl with The Lower Back Tattoo and The Princess Diarist! Great list 🙂
My TTT post is here: http://bit.ly/2idc1za
Aweee that’s sad to hear but I get what you mean! I guess we shall see if I feel the same! My expectations are high though…so it’s likely 😛
And I hope you get to read both of those!!! Thanks so much for reading, and I’ll be sure to check your post out!!!
Salt To The Sea was on my list this week too! I loved Rebel of The Sands when I read it last year, so I hope you enjoy it too!
My TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2017/01/10/top-ten-tuesday-91/
I hope we will both end up reading St to the Sea! And that’s great about Rebel 😀
Also I’ll definitely check your post out! Thanks for the comment!
I’m terrible at reading books right when they’re released. I’m always a few years behind (is that bad?–haha). So no need to be embarrassed!
It’s not bad and you’re not alone! Also thank you for your kind words! 😀
I nominated you for the Mystery blogger award

I enjoyed Rebel of the Sands; it had an interesting setting and worldbuilding, and the story was pretty fast-paced. I still want to read The Girls some time, though!
By the way, I’ve nominated you for the Mystery Blog Award! https://bookishvillainy.wordpress.com/2017/01/12/mystery-blogger-award/

I didn’t know about The Princess Diarist </3 I miss Carrie Fisher so much :'(
A House Without Windows was one of My Lit Box's featured books! I think it was in August…but I still haven't had a chance to read it. Sigh. It does sounds great, though, and maybe I'll finally get around to it in 2017!
This is such a great TTT idea. But I personally don't want to list all the 2016 releases I wanted to read, but couldn't get to. I would end up disappointed in stressed out over all the books I still have to read. x) I rather pretend I don't have a ginormous TBR as much as I can.
Yaaaay I’m always happy to be the first to expose someone to a particular book! 😀
The Girls is on my tbr list too. I felt like I could go anywhere on the internet without it cropping up to remind me that I still hadn’t read it yet. But I have a copy, so I’m halfway there? I had a copy of The Rebel of the Sands in my hand at the library earlier but I already had 3 books so I had to put it down. I did a terrible job of reading new releases in 2016!
Ahhh you ARE halfway there! I hope that you get to read it soon! And Rebel of the Sands too! And don’t worry haha you’re definitely not alone! 🙂
