– MY REVIEW –

The colours on the cover of this comic book is what caught my attention first, I believe. I was browsing the Image Comics website and looking at their “coming soon” section when the cover of Snotgirl Volume 1 caught my eye. The next thing I noticed was the illustration style (which I really really like), and then the font and layout of the title. Overall, the cover of this comic was appealing to me, and the name intriguing enough,that I did not even bother reading the description before adding it to my “to read” list!

I originally requested it from the publisher, but my contact and I lost touch, so I ended up just borrowing it from my local library. I put a hold on it before the library even physically had it available, and finally got my hands on it not too long ago. I was overjoyed, and ended up opening this comic up right when I got home, and then having to work an hour later than usual, because I used up an hour in the middle of my workday just to read Snotgirl all in one sitting!

Since I still hadn’t read the description/summary by the time I started reading this comic, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. All I knew was that the main character, Lottie, is a girl with green hair, and snot coming out of her nose.

I was pleasantly surprised with the fact that the style and colours of the cover image remained the same in the interior,(because there have been cases for me, with other comic books, where the cover image would be very aesthetically appealing, and the art on the inside turned out being quite disappointing in comparison). Not only was this comic a pleasant surprise visually, but the plot also held my attention, and kept me intrigued throughout.

It’s tough to explain the plot without giving anything away, but I think that a good portion of the appeal for me was that she is a blogger like myself, and that I understood some of the things Lottie would mention, or have to deal with. There was also a number of plot lines, all of which contained varying degrees of mystery. I devoured this comic book in one sitting, like I said, and I cannot wait for the next issue to come out!

Bryan Lee O’Malley is a Canadian cartoonist. His first original graphic novel was Lost at Sea (2003), and he is best-known for the six-volume Scott Pilgrim series (2004 to 2010). All of his Scott Pilgrim graphic novels were published by Portland, Oregon-based Oni Press. In July 2014 his graphic novel Seconds was released by Ballantine Books. He is also a songwriter and musician (as Kupek and formerly in several short-lived Toronto bands).
