Heartstopper Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4 by Alice Oseman (Review)

⤖ Introduction ⬻

I’m immensely grateful to Scholastic Canada for sending me volumes 2, 3, 4 (and more recently 5) of the graphic novel series Heartstopper by Alice Oseman! Continue below for my full review of volumes 1-4.

⤖ My Review ⬻

I read the first 2 volumes of the Heartstopper graphic novel series by Alice Oseman before the first season of the Netflix show was released and I really enjoyed them. Charlie and Nick became dear to me and close to my heart as early as midway through the first volume.

Alice Oseman’s storytelling style shines brightly through this series. Her narrative style seamlessly intertwines with her illustrations, infusing life into the characters and scenes. Oseman is great at setting the scene using just the illustrations, as well as depicting character emotions in the way she drew their expressions from panel to panel.

I found it really interesting how she made the story really come to life using nothing but black lines on paper. It was really like the pictures moved in my head, rather than my eyes taking me from one 2D panel to another.

Once I finished season 1 of the Heartstopper show, I dove right into volume 3, needing to know where Charlie and Nick’s story goes next. One of the first things I noted was that the vibe and casting of the show matched the graphic novels very well (at lease for the way I read them and the impression they left on me).

I’m very grateful to Scholastic Canada for providing me with volues 2, 3, and 4 to read and review (and enjoy)! I now just need to finish season 2 of the TV show adaptation, then dive into volume 5 which Scholastic Canada has also generously sent my way!

All in all, the Heartstopper series warms my heart while also breaking it at times. It’s definitely a comfort series for me, making me smile and feel cozy while also helping me work through some darker feelings.

This series hits all the right spots, balancing heartfelt moments with the more serious stuff. For anyone seeking a touching and real story about human connections and emotions, Heartstopper is an absolute must-read.
