Top Ten Tuesday (#7): The Top Ten Books That I Wish Were Movies

toptentuesday2

It’s Tuesday again! And that means it’s time for Top Ten Tuesday! This is one of my favourite memes, seriously, and judging from the responses to my past Top Ten Tuesday posts, you guys seems to prefer these weekly posts too!

This week’s prompt is:

Movie Freebie – top ten all time favorite movies, top ten foreign films, top ten rom-coms, top ten 90’s movies, top ten action flicks, top ten tear-jerkers, top ten movies your favorite actor/actress is in, top ten movies with PoC leads, etc. etc.)

ezgif-com-7c7d5423b9And after some deliberation, as well as a poll on Twitter (though I couldn’t wait to get more than 8 voters, because I wanted to finish this post ASAP), I have decided to go with writing a post about….The top 10 books that I wish were movies!

(Note: Please don’t be mad if a book is already in the process of being made into a film and I didn’t mention it. Or if I’m not up to date on any film news in general, haha.)

 – ONE –

J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany’s
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry_Potter_and_the_Cursed_Child_Special_Rehearsal_Edition_Book_CoverAlthough I’m not sure if this could be adapted into film form, the reason why I would see this as a film is because the majority of us Harry Potter fans are unable to fly to London in order to see the play version. And for those who do not see it as canon, the film could be filmed as a sort of spin off, or AU (alternate universe) film. I just would really like to see this plot play out somewhere other than in my mind. Do any of you agree? Disagree?

(You can read my review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child here.)

– TWO –

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’s Saga

15704307I’ve only read the first volume of this comic book series, but I think that a live action or an animated film version would be a lot of fun to watch! I know that I, for one, would be very entertained. It certainly wouldn’t be a film for children or young teens though, just like the comic book, because I think that the impact of the story would be different if a movie-maker were to remove the adult content.

– THREE –

J.R.R. Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien’s The Silmarilion

41sjj1ldxrlThere has been talk of this particular book of Tolkien’s being adapted into film by Peter Jackson. But as far as I know, nothing has been confirmed yet. There have been rumors that the Tolkien family won’t allow Jackson to adapt this book, because they didn’t like what he’d done with The Hobbit. Or maybe the deal just hasn’t been struck yet. Some fans don’t want this book being turned into a film, while others are excited at the prospect (and I am definitely a part of the latter group). I could never get enough of Middle Earth and Tolkien’s stories, and I would love to see all of the stories and characters from inside The Silmarilion on the big screen.

– FOUR –

Erin Bow’s The Scorpion Rules

28589322The Scorpion Rules would also be interesting to see on the big screen as well. And it would definitely get more people to read the books (this one and second book in the duology, The Swan Riders). It would also encourage the author to write more books (hopefully). I think that this book is fairly adaptable, setting-wise, character-wise, special-effect-wise, etc. etc. Our movie scene also always in need of some more diversity, which this book (if adapted properly) would definitely provide.

(You can read my review of The Scorpion Rules and The Swan Riders here and here.)

– FIVE –

Kiersten White’s And I Darken

51MRi3gM06L._SX329_BO1,204,203,200_This book could also be adapted into a movie with ease, in my opinion. Plenty of other movies have been made using the required locations, costumes, and props required to make And I Darken into a movie. With the growing popularity of female heroes in films lately (thank goodness), I think Lada would rock it, and stand out while doing so. The political and social of the aspects would also be interesting to see in film-form, as well as the battle scenes!

(You can read my review of And I Darken here.)

– SIX –

S.J. Kincaid’s The Diabolic

the_diabolic-3I know that there’s talk of The Diabolic being picked up by Sony Pictures already, but I don’t think it’s been confirmed…so I think this still counts, haha. This book would definitely adapt well into a film version. I’m very curious to see what they’ll do with Kincaid’s imaginative settings, as well as all of the memorable and interesting characters. I also hope that this film comes out as soon as possible, but is also of very good quality. I don’t like when movies look and feel too…hurried.

(You can read my review of The Diabolic here.)

 – SEVEN –

Destiny Soria’s Iron Cast

28818313This book would be a lot of fun in the form of a movie, particularly because of the setting (1919 Boston! Ahh!) as well as the music and the fashion. Also, there is also a unique magic system, as well as a mystery plot. What more could you ask for?! Oh, there is also action and romance! How could I forget to mention those? I would love to see this book turned into a film.

(You can read my review of Iron Cast here.)

– EIGHT –

Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone

10194157This one I’m not 100% sure about. I’m not ready to say goodbye to this world yet (and I thankfully have 3 more books left to experience), and I think that this is part of the reason why I would like to see this story adapted into a film. I also think, that aside, that this book would make a good film if it was done properly. The props, wardrobe, and special effects, as well as the settings would have to be on point. I would accept nothing but perfection in any film about this particular world and story.

(You can read my review of Shadow and Bone here.)

– NINE –

Marissa Meyer’s Cinder

cinderMost of you will have read this book, or have at least heard of it. While it would not be a good stand-alone film (just as the book would not work as a stand-alone book), it would definitely make a good film series. I would be particularly excited to see what the filmmakers did with the settings (especially New Beijing, and the palace), as well as Cinder’s cyborg parts. We’ve advanced quite a big with CGI, especially with those green sensor suits (I’m sure they have a name, but I can’t think of it, and I’m no expert).

(You can read my review of Cinder here.)

– TEN –

Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses

77493_originalAnd finally, number 10. This is another one I’m not entirely sure about, just because a film could go so wrong. And why not leave a good thing along, right? Maybe this book, and a lot of the books I’ve listed above should just be left alone. I know that a lot of us have encountered movie adaptations of books which did not do the books justice, and that these experiences were disappointing. But there have also been good film adaptations. I guess that it’ll always be a tough call, and filmmakers will always be taking a chance when they pick up a book and intend to turn it into a film. And we as readers and viewers also take a chance every time we decide to trust filmmakers to do the book justice, as well as every time we sit down and decide to watch a film adaptation of a book.

  1. I would absolutely go bonkers if Saga were made into a movie. I hadn’t even really thought of that as a concept before and now that I’m imagining it my mind is somewhat blown. I agree, the story would be altered too much if the adult content were removed. I can’t decide if I’d prefer live action or animation, though. Perhaps live action if they had a fairly large special effects budget? I’m totally game for either! I’d also love to see A Court of Thorns and Roses made into a movie. Awesome list, thanks for sharing!

    1. Ahhh I’m so glad you agree! And yes, if it were live action, they’d have to have the best effects. No question.

Thanks so much for commenting! 🙂

  2. I wholly agree with this list (at least those I have read)! I think nowadays most books seem like they were already written to be easily adapted? Which is both strange and awesome hahaha

    1. Yay! Thank you 🙂 I was worried that people would be mad that I suggested some or all of these haha.

And that’s an interesting point. I didn’t think of that…but now it makes sense. I suppose it’s the goal of most authors to see their work up on the big screen…or even the small screen 🙂

  3. I would love to see the Lunar Chronicles made into a movie. After a quick search on the author’s website I noticed that the rights have been optioned — I’m a little excited by this prospect.

    1. I’m so glad you agree! And oh my gosh thanks so much for sharing that! That IS exciting. I hope that whoever picks up the rights does the story justice.

  4. Excellent picks! I need to read Saga! But what awesome movies, can you imagine?
I would love to see The Scorpion Rules on the big screen!
Haven’t read The Diabolical bc I couldn’t get my hands on it, but then Simon & Schuster sent me an email saying I could pick a book for free, and there it was! I’m so excited to read it!

    1. Oh my gosh! That would actually be so cool! Because they could devote more time to the little details. And I love details. Someone should pitch this to Netflix 😛
