Ever since the teaser trailer came out for this movie (sometime last year), I’d been very eager to see this movie. I’m not the greatest fan of superhero movies, but I do really enjoy them when I watch them. They’re just not the type of movies I would watch on my own, if that makes sense. As more and more trailers for this movie were released, however, I found myself becoming more and more eager to watch the full film! We have so many movies about male super heroes, and while those are great too (I love you, Iron Man and Captain America!) it’s quite rare to have any movies which solely focus on a female superhero. Also, this article perfectly expresses how I feel about all previous female superhero films up to this point.

While I was abroad for nearly a month, I managed to get away from the trailers, but still saw posters and other advertisements about the movie everywhere (especially in Seoul, South Korea)! Luckily, the movie did not come out while I was abroad, but two days after I returned to Canada. And this was lucky because I had promised my boyfriend that I would watch it with him when I got back, and I’m not sure if I could have said “no” if my friends would have wanted to watch it while we were in Korea (yes, I’m a horrible girlfriend, I know!)

But back to the movie itself. We managed to get some very good seats for the Tuesday after the movie was released (mainly because I was too jet lagged to make it through a late movie on any days before then, and because we try to avoid the weekend craziness at the theater). And then we were finally watching it!

From the moment the film started rolling (or I suppose, the file started playing), Wonder Woman had my full attention. I’ve never read any of the DC or Marvel comics, and therefore have no previous knowledge about any of the characters before watching the films. Wonder Woman was no different, and I was very eager to find out more about Diana’s backstory! I remember being so enraptured, that I even got annoyed with my boyfriend for breaking my concentration when he offered me a marshmallow strawberry (and I love those!) I almost went all Amazon on him (poor guy).

The score for this film was absolutely fantastic, and the cinematography was stellar! I am also quite happy with the casting, and am a big fan of Gal Gadot (because I do not find her typically pretty, but rather striking, and I like that she was not another stick figure in a tasteless, sexualized costume). I found all of Diana’s outfits to be tasteful, and also found her body shape to be one which girls and women can realistically strive to achieve. Gal Gadot looks strong and healthy as Wonder Woman, and this made me incredibly happy, not only because it had a positive influence on me, but also because of the positive influence it would project onto girls which are younger, and much more impressionable.

Diana, while physically powerful, was also very endearingly naive in this origins film, which is something that I found to be refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable for a number of reasons. Character interaction (with or without Diana) was also great. The characters and their interactions were believable, and interesting to watch. And when it came to conflict or fight scenes, I found that I could not look away. The comic elements were also quite great, and I found myself laughing uncontrollably with the rest of the audience numerous times!

And now I will discuss why my rating for this film is missing half a star (or I suppose, half a husky). There was a particular part in the film (and I cannot specify which one without spoiling anything, so I shall refrain), which I found to be a little awkward, and harder to believe. I found myself pulled out of the film at this point, simply due to how awkward I found it to be (I’m sorry I can’t think of another word to describe it). It just really stuck out for me, and I am not sure if this happened because of a change in style, something to do with editing, or maybe because I was simply getting tired. The ending of the film felt normal enough, though, so I doubt that my need for sleep had anything to do with it. To be entirely sure, I suppose I will just have to go re-watch the film though!

Re-watching it was my plan even before coming to this realization, however, as the film had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Wonder Woman did not only have a hold over my eyes, but also my heart, and although it left my heart in shambles, I know that I will be re-watching it quite a bit over the years to come! Hopefully I can also catch it in theaters one more time! Though this shouldn’t be a problem, since I think that it will be playing on screens, aweing audiences, for quite some time.
