weekly meme, wishlist wednesdays

Wishlist Wednesdays (#3)

giphyWooooow it’s been a while since I wrote one of these! I guess I have been busy though. I’ve been working freelance, and reading a lot. I also just spent 24 days in Romania, visiting family. And the free time I had there, I spent either doing school work or reading. It’s been an adventure, haha. But in any case, I haven’t had much time to post anything other than reviews on here.

Now I’m sitting in Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam though, for a 17 hour layover (save me!), and before I try sleeping, I thought I could try writing up a daily meme post for you guys! And since it’s Wednesday, that of course means it’ll have to be a Wishlist Wednesday post!

For those unfamiliar with Wishlist Wednesdays, it’s a book blog hop where we will post about one book per week that has been on our wishlist for some time, or just added (it’s entirely up to you), that we can’t wait to get off the wishlist and onto our wonderful shelves. Wishlist Wednesday is also hosted by the lovely Pen to Paper, and this was her most recent Wishlist Wednesday post!!

This week’s book has not been on my wishlist for very long, but I have been very interested in reading it ever since I found out about it. And it’s……….

Do you believe there are ghosts and demons and Diviners among us?

Evie O’Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City–and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It’s 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfield girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her Uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.

Evie worries he’ll discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer. As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho hides a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened….
Printz Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Libba Bray opens a brand-new historical series with The Diviners, where the glittering surface of the Roaring Twenties hides a mystical horror creeping across the country.

tumblr_nq2hv81qc01rdfgw4o1_r1_500I don’t know about you, but I love the 20s! It may be because I studied 20s films in school, but I just really enjoy that time period; the music, the fashion, the style of speech, etc. There was of course the issue of women’s rights (or lack thereof) in that time, and it really bothers me when I see a woman get slapped by a man, in these movies, and everyone acting as if it was the norm. I’m glad things are not like that today, although we still have a ways to go until we have gender equality (in some locations more so than others).

But, back onto the subject of The Diviners! I think that I read a similar book earlier this month, titled Iron Cast (you can read my review here), which also takes place in the 20s (though more specifically in 1919), and which is also about a group of people who have special powers. There is also some mystery, and of course 20s music and fashion!

tumblr_o9cs3j5qdv1tr3uggo1_500The Diviners sounds like a supernatural mystery set in the 1920s, with lots of twists and turns. And it also looks like a very thick book (which is always a plus for me, if the book is good! Have you ever tried to read a longer book which is bleh or just plain not good?)

Considering the fact that I really enjoyed Iron Cast, and that I keep seeing pictures of The Diviners all over my Instagram (as well as praises), I think that I will thorougly enjoy this book when I get to it. My TBR pile is kind of insane, though, so we’ll have to see when that’ll be exactly.
