Manny Dogra is the beautiful young CEO of Breakup, a highly successful company that helps people manage their relationship breakups. As preoccupied as she is with her business, she’s also planning her wedding to handsome architect Adam Jamieson while dealing with the loss of her beloved parents.
For reasons Manny has never understood, her mother and father, who were both born in India, always wanted her to become an “All-American” girl. So that’s what she did. She knows next to nothing about her South Asian heritage, and that’s never been a problem—until her parents are no longer around, and an image of Manny that’s been Photoshopped to make her skin look more white appears on a major magazine cover. Suddenly, the woman who built an empire encouraging people to be true to themselves is having her own identity crisis.
But when an irritating client named Sammy Patel approaches Manny with an odd breakup request, the perfect solution presents itself: If they both agree to certain terms, he’ll give her a crash course in being “Indian” at his brother’s wedding.
What follows is days of dancing and dal, masala and mehndi as Manny meets the lovable, if endlessly interfering, aunties and uncles of the Patel family, and, along the way, discovers much more than she could ever have anticipated.
⤖ My Review ⬻
Sonya Singh’s Sari Not Sari is one of my top romance reads of the year so far! I really enjoyed it. Where do I start? I suppose I can start with my top most favourite part was the dialogue. Hands down, Sari Not Sari had some of the best dialogue I’ve come across in my man years of reading! Some of it was also so funny that it made me laugh out loud in public places—I couldn’t hold in my laugher!
Some of my other favourite things were the characters and their stories. Also their relationships with each other prior to the story as well as how they developed as the story progressed! I especially liked that one of the lead characters, Manny was portrayed as a strong business leader as well as someone who was looking for something.
I also found the other lead, Sammy, to be an interesting character—definitely different from some of the leads I’ve come across in romance books even though I can’t put my finger on quite why that is (especially without delving into spoiler territory). I’ll leave it at: I loved the lead characters and their interactions with each other as well as other characters—whether they were characters who make multiple appearances or who we meet only once.
The storyline was also great! And the flow was perfect for me except for a small portion (so small that I almost didn’t mention it). At times I laughed, at others I cried, and at others I held my breath, on the edge of my seat. Sari Not Sari was entertaining, sweet, heart-wrenching and heartwarming. Sonya Singh is definitely an author I’ll be watching for more releases from!
I LOVE great dialogue – definitely adding this one to my TBR!
