Driving home late one night, Etain Larkin finds a corpse on a pitch-black country road deep in the Irish countryside. She takes the corpse to a remote farmhouse. So begins a night of unspeakable horror that will take her to the very brink of sanity.
She will never speak of it again.
Two decades later, Betty Fitzpatrick, newly arrived at college in Dublin, has already fallen in love with the drama society, and the beautiful but troubled Ashling Mallen. As their relationship blossoms, Ashling goes to great lengths to keep Betty away from her family, especially her alcoholic mother, Etain.
As their relationship blossoms, Betty learns her lover’s terrifying family history, and Ashling’s secret obsession. Ashling has become convinced that the horrors inflicted on her family are connected to a seemingly innocent children’s TV show. Everyone in Ireland watched this show in their youth, but Ash soon discovers that no one remembers it quite the same way. And only Ashling seems to remember its a small black goat puppet who lives in a box and only comes out if you don’t behave. They say he’s never come out.
Almost never.
When the door between the known and unknown opens, it can never close again.
⤖ My Review ⬻
The first thing that caught my attention about Knock Knock, Open Wide was the eerie cover—it depicts two people almost portrayed as a nesting doll, with one of them peeking out from the other. The most outer person also has horns on their head which I found both creepy and intriguing.
When I read the synopsis I was even more intrigued—I was especially excited at the prospect of reading a story set in Ireland in the 80s and 90s. I also really enjoy family horror, and family mysteries, so I was excited for that aspect as well. And finally, I was of course excited for the paranormal, supernatural pieces of the story!
Diving into Knock Knock, Open Wide, I found it a bit slow to start, but I pushed through and once things got really creepy, I was hooked. Neil Sharpson skillfully built tension and suspense, drawing me into a web of family secrets and supernatural occurrences. I liked how many questions the events that took place brought up, especially with the switch back and forth between what happened in the 80s and then the 90s for two separate generations. Things were revealed slowly from chapter to chapter…but I still didn’t see the end coming.
Knock Knock, Open Wide delivers a chilling and atmospheric tale that kept me guessing until the final page. Sharpson’s evocative prose and intricate plotting make for a compelling read that explores the dark corners of familial bonds and the mysteries that lie hidden within. Fans of psychological horror, atmospheric thrillers, body horror, and folk horror will find much to enjoy in this haunting novel.
