Aspiring musician Ruby Tucker has had enough of her small rural town and dysfunctional family. But a falling out with her best friend and bandmate has killed her dreams of escaping and making it big in the Atlanta punk scene.
While helping her eccentric neighbor organize his religious relics, an ancient ring clamps down on her finger―possessing her with the spirit of a blood-thirsty demon. There’s no getting it off unless hundreds of people chant a spell to set Ruby free. And what’s worse, the ring is a beacon for evil, drawing an unimaginably wicked mob straight to Ruby, hungry for her flesh.
If Ruby can get her band back together, she has a shot at salvation. It’s time for her to face the music and put her whole soul into a song―one powerful enough to raise some Hell.
⤖ My Review ⬻
I read my first book by Brom, Slewfoot, in 2022 and loved it. The haunting atmosphere, Brom’s storytelling, and the inclusion of his own artwork made it such a memorable experience. So when I heard that Brom was coming out with another book and that it would be focused on the 80s, music, and possession, I knew I wanted to read and review it.
Evil in Me took me a little bit longer to get into than Slewfoot, but once I did, I found myself really enjoying the ride. I loved the 80s setting and seeing Brom’s unique style applied to a more contemporary timeline compared to the historical backdrop of Slewfoot.
I was also really glad to see some of Brom’s original artwork once more included inside the book. His illustrations always add so much depth to his stories, and Evil in Me is no exception. The visuals gave me a better sense of the characters and amplified the eerie, unsettling tone of the narrative.
Lastly, I wanted to note that I experienced most of Evil in Me in audiobook format, and I was happy to experience some musical additions to the audio experience. It added an immersive layer to the story and tied in beautifully with the novel’s themes. Overall, I definitely enjoyed Evil in Me, and while I wait for Brom’s next release, I’ll be tackling that books on his backlist.
