How is it March already?! Time sure does fly. But anyway, I’m very excited to greet March, as this means our third set of posts will be going up. And March is also my birthday month! Yay! For those of you new to Calendar Girls, it’s a new blog event which I am co-hosting with my friend Melanie inspired by Neil Sedaka’s 1961 song Calendar Girl. Just like in the song, we decided to use a specific theme for each month and choose a book based on these themes! The event is meant to incite discussions with other bloggers about books we’ve read and loved, is meant to help bloggers meet other bloggers, and also for bloggers and readers to find out about blogs which they normally may not have come across!

And now…without further ado, here is my choice for March’s theme…
– Best Book with an Active War –
The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien!
I don’t even know if I should have to explain this one, haha. I’m a mega Tolkien fan, and have known about his stories since I was very very small, since my father read most of his books. Sadly, I was only mature enough to read and understand The Lord of the Rings, but I am so glad that I did. By that point, I’d already read The Hobbit multiple times, and had seen the film trilogy even more times. But reading the book trilogy itself was quite an experience. The world which I had loved from my first contact with it, was laid out in even more detail than before, and I happily soaked it all up. The battles which take place in the third and finally book in the series, are some of the most epic which I have ever experienced (cinematically and in literature). Therefore, even though I could have picked this book, or series, for April’s theme (see below), I have decided to pick it for this month in stead, and I will pick something else entirely for April!

Great choice!! If I had read it I would have chosen it too!! It was epic!! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched both trilogies… and I’ve also been meaning to read them but I am not ready yet!! 🙂 I’ve difficulties thinking about a book for this month… so maybe I’ll have to skip it!
Thank you! And I hope that you get to read the trilogy soon! The movies are so good, and the books just have more detail, or alternatives to how certain things in the movies happened. It was a joy to read them, even if it was for school, hehe.

High Fantasy is a wonderful topic! Though unfortunately the only one I’ve read is the gif you used lol. I’ve read The Hobbit, and started the first Lotr book but I haven’t been able to get through it. It’s just kind of boring to me. I will finish it one day, and I bet I’ll love it then but I’ve kind of put it to the side.
Hehe I wish I can say that I’ve read all of the Song of Ice and Fire books, but I haven’t even really gotten through the first one. An I think that is because by the time I started reading, I already knew what would happen.
Strangely that wasn’t an issue with me for the LOTR trilogy, haha. I don’t know…my brain works in strange ways.
I’m on the third song of ice and fire book atm (and have been for the past few months lol, I pick it up every once in a while when I really feel like reading it).
Ahhh seems to be a common thing. Maybe these books are just meant to be read slowly and savored? Who knows haha
I started reading the GoT books after it became a TV show too, found I vastly preferred the books but they are HARD to get through. I think it took me about a month to get through the last one/
Gahhh yeah. I’m glad it’s not just me who’s having a hard time. I don’t think that the issue is with GoT specifically, since I don’t usually read books if I’ve already seen the TV show or movie versions already to begin with…for this reason…haha. Glad you were able to read them though! And I hope the next one comes out SOON

I knew someone would choose this and it’s such an excellent pick! I have not yet read the LOTR trilogy, but I’ve always wanted to. In reality I just haven’t made the time for it :O I have read The Hobbit though and loved it, and I am a huge fan of all of the associated movies! Great choice, I can’t wait to see what you choose for next month’s theme! (P.S. it’s not a fair theme, there’s about 6 books/series that I already can’t decide between!) Great job!
Oh man, I have never been able to get through the whole LOTR trilogy, not even for my Tolkien and Fantasy class at Laurier. I love Tolkien and I love his world building but I just find those books to be a slog. Maybe I should try them again now, never know tastes change! Haha. I loved the movies, and I loved the Hobbit.
I’m excited about April’s theme, I thought I had my answer but then I realised that the book I was going to choose is only partially a high-fantasy, first and foremost it is secondary-world fantasy, which is just not quite the same. So now I shall have to think of my choice!

Haha yes I took the Tolkien class and LOVED it! Amazed I was able to read everything that was assigned, actually, hahaha. It was a fun AND challenging course for me 🙂

I have yet to make it to any of the Hobbit or Lord of the Rings novels, but you made a fantastic choice! I’ve seen and heard enough to know the concept, and now with your glowing recommendation, I might really have to pick them up. Epic battles does seem quite interesting. Fantastic post, and I’ve now added yet another book to my mental TBR. XD These posts are so dangerous for it.
Hehe, I hear ya! I can’t even count the amount of books I’ve added to my TBR because of posts on other blogs! I also hope that you’ll enjoy the Tolkien books when you do pick them up 🙂
