Title: What the Flower Says of Death
Author: Danielle Koste
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Romance
Published: September 25, 2018
Violet Holt has already met Death once.
After a failed suicide attempt, she finds herself dumped by her callous mother on the doorstep of her family’s desolate oceanside estate. With only the company of her estranged grandmother, comatose grandfather, and the monsters in her head, at least there was no one to interfere with her plans to try again on her eighteenth birthday.
No one, except maybe Jack: a skeleton of a boy who says he’s there to rake her grandmother’s leaves, yet seems more experienced at stalking than grounds-keeping. She knows he’s keeping a secret behind his gentle smiles and aloofness, but it’s difficult for Violet to be put off by his untimely thin-air appearances when figuring out the mystery of his true identity makes for such a good distraction.
Violet’s trauma is deeper than the wound on her wrist though, and it cannot be simply whisked away in a whirlwind of guessing games and pleasant gestures. She struggles to reconnect with her grandmother, find forgiveness for her mother, and closure with her grandfather’s dire condition, all while battling the strain of it all on her family. Even with a flicker of something hopeful blossoming within herself, Violet knows her birthday plans must be inevitable.
Death wouldn’t be there for her if it wasn’t.
– Q&A with Jack & Violet –
Can you introduce yourselves?
Violet: I’m Violet. I’m seventeen. My mother and I live in New York but most of our family is in Newport.
Jack: I’m Jack. I’m not from Newport. 🙂
Violet, do you like living in New York?
Violet: It’s OK. I’d prefer to live in Newport full time though, or move somewhere else. I don’t really like the big cities. I prefer the nature and the ocean. It inspires me much more.
What are some of your interests?
Violet: I like to draw, and read. I keep a journal but at this point it’s mostly just a sketch book. I like baking also but I’m sorta hit and miss with it. I used to horseback ride but it’s been a while. I really like going for walks, especially here at my grandmother’s estate because it’s so quiet away from the city. I like the forest a lot. Am I talking too much?
Jack: I like to read also. And I like music. I’d love to learn how to play an instrument, but that’s difficult. I also like Violets 🙂
What kind of music do you each like?
Violet: I’m kind of picky… I’m not really into pop music. I grew up listening to my grandparents records as a kid so I like a lot of older music, but if I listen to something new it’s got to have some soulfulness about it. I think there are so many singers out there that can experience intense emotion with just their voice. Why would I ever choose to listen to someone singing about a hookup when there’s so much passion out there? There are too many songs about being happy. I like songs that make the sadness feel special and beautiful also.
Jack: There was this song playing on the radio when we were driving into town, it was a rock song. A little grungy, and emotional. I think I like that kind of music. I mean, I like all kinds of music but, I can’t get that one out of my head.
What’s your favorite time of year? Kind of weather?
Violet: I like the summer. The sun brings me to life. All the plants are in full bloom. Everything smells fresh and alive. And summer showers are divine.
Jack: I think I like the late fall. I don’t mind the cold all that much. It makes you want to bundle up by a fire.
What are you zodiac signs? Do you think they fit you?
Violet: Mine is Capricorn. I’m not really sure if I identify with it very much. I guess Capricorn’s are supposed to be kinda pragmatic… which I don’t really feel like I am? I guess I can be a little stubborn though, sometimes.
Jack: I don’t know mine. If I had to choose though I think I’d go with Pisces. They’re the caring ones, right? I feel like I’m pretty good at caring for other people.
Violet: That’s not really how it works…
What’s your favourite holiday?
Violet: We had really fantastic Christmases at my grandparents when I was a kid. I really liked them. All the food and presents and decorations. It was very grand. I wish we did that more in the city.
Jack: I’ve never gotten a chance to participate in Halloween. I feel like it would be fun. Getting to be someone or something else for a night.
If you had to buy a gift for the other person, what would you get them?
Jack: That’s easy. A new journal. 🙂
Violet: Probably a book. Preferably one he’s never read, about somewhere he’s never been or something he’s never experienced.
Let’s end on something light. If you had to pick one thing to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Violet: Chinese food. There’s so many different options I’d never get sick of it. No that’s not cheating.
Jack: Probably Violet’s grandmother’s cookies.
