This cookbook, based on the game-changing web series Chef’s Night Out, features stories of the world’s best chefs’ debauched nights on the town, and recipes for the food they cook to soak up the booze afterwards. MUNCHIES brings the hugely popular show Chef’s Night Out (on VICE Media’s food website, MUNCHIES) to the page with snapshots of food culture in cities around the world, plus tall tales and fuzzy recollections from 65 of the world’s top chefs, including Anthony Bourdain, Dominique Crenn, David Chang, Danny Bowien, Wylie Dufresne, Inaki Aizpitarte, and Enrique Olvera, among others. Then there are the recipes: dishes these chefs cook when they’re done feeding customers, and ready to feed their friends instead. With chapters like “Drinks” (i.e., how to get your night started), “Things with Tortillas,” “Hardcore” (which includes pizzas, nachos, poutines, and more), and “Morning After” (classy and trashy dishes for the bleary-eyed next day), MUNCHIES features more than 65 recipes to satisfy any late-night craving and plenty of drinks to keep the party going.

Some of you may have heard of, or seen, the MUNCHIES YouTube series. Well, this is for you, whether you have heard of/seen any episodes or not. Here is the MUNCHIES video that I’m most familiar with, and which made me want to dine at a restaurant called Momofuku in Toronto for my boyfriend’s birthday this year!

Even just flipping through this book for the first time made me hungry. So you can imagine how I felt when I actually sat down to read it cover to cover! Torture. Absolute torture. You may be wondering why I am saying that I read a cook book cover to cover though, so please let me explain. This is not a cookbook containing only photos of delicious-looking food and the corresponding recipes, there are intros, and also full (mostly-humorous) articles which go with every single recipe!

unnamed (7)The book is very nicely sectioned off, so that you can find something specific that you may be looking for, or so that it pleases you to read through it if you like things nicely-categorized (such as for a reader like myself). Munchies is a hardcover book; sturdily made so that it can make its home on your coffee table, or in your kitchen without being overly damaged. The pages are also of the highest quality, and will also be resistant to food and drink spills, as well as inevitable droolage. Every single page of this book is glossy, and the quality of colour is very satisfying.

Like I said above, this book made me very hungry and wanting to spend all of my money on restaurant outings. It also made me feel more open to experimenting with the mixture of certain food-types that I would not have normally thought to combine. A great quality book, inside and out!
