Calendar Girls (January 2019): Happy New Year (2019 Release You’re Most Looking Forward To)

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year! Also, welcome to my first Calendar Girls Books post of 2019! This month, our prompt is 2019 Release You’re Most Looking Forward To, and making a choice was quite difficult! I initially picked The Wicked King by Holly Black too, but then had to change this post last night because I actually finished reading that book on the 5th! I also had Slayer by Kiersten White in my honourable mentions but removed it because I’m already reading it, haha. Picking yet another top choice wasn’t easy, but I do think that it is the very top choice for me at the moment!

Hosted by Katie @ Never Not Reading and Darque Reader Reads, “Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and will now be hosted by me, Katie. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl. Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and I will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!” — Katie

Title: Enchantée

Paris in 1789 is a labyrinth of twisted streets, filled with beggars, thieves, revolutionaries—and magicians…

When smallpox kills her parents, Camille Durbonne must find a way to provide for her frail, naive sister while managing her volatile brother. Relying on petty magic—la magie ordinaire—Camille painstakingly transforms scraps of metal into money to buy the food and medicine they need. But when the coins won’t hold their shape and her brother disappears with the family’s savings, Camille must pursue a richer, more dangerous mark: the glittering court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

With dark magic forbidden by her mother, Camille transforms herself into the ‘Baroness de la Fontaine’ and is swept up into life at the Palace of Versailles, where aristocrats both fear and hunger for la magie. There, she gambles at cards, desperate to have enough to keep herself and her sister safe. Yet the longer she stays at court, the more difficult it becomes to reconcile her resentment of the nobles with the enchantments of Versailles. And when she returns to Paris, Camille meets a handsome young balloonist—who dares her to hope that love and liberty may both be possible.

But la magie has its costs. And when Camille loses control of her secrets, the game she’s playing turns deadly. Then revolution erupts, and she must choose—love or loyalty, democracy or aristocracy, freedom or magic—before Paris burns…

  1. I love that today we ALL have different winners!!! I am curious about Enchantee! And Wicked Saint landed on my kindle as I was drawn at random by the publisher! YESSSSSS!

    1. Thank you so much! And Happy Near Year to you too! I’m also going to try to read more adult romance this year as well and have found quite a few to add to my reading list 😀 I hope that we both enjoy Matchmaker!

    1. Such a good choice! Like I said in my comment to your post, I ALMOST picked King of Fools. It was so so close! Haha. I cannot wait to see what happens and am like super sad that there won’t be any ARCs of that one being distributed in Canada haha

  2. I’m really excited for this book too! But I’ve heard some kind of mixed reviews for it, which makes me a little nervous. Still, it’s one of the few YA novels I’ve actually added to my tbr, so there’s that!

  3. My goal this year was to read more backlist books, but I’m not sure if that will happen with so many amazing releases!
