Calendar Girls (August 2019): Book Lover’s Day (Favorite Book You’ve Read This Year)

It’s time for another Calendar Girls Books post, and this month our prompt is Book Lover’s Day: Favorite Book You’ve Read This Year! It took some decision making, but I think I narrowed it down okay. I was very stuck between the book that I chose and my first honourable mention, but then ended up making my choice and I feel happy and confident about it, haha. Continue reading to see which book was my top read of the year (and to see my honourable mentions)!

Hosted by Katie @ Never Not Reading and Darque Reader Reads, “Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and will now be hosted by me, Katie. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl. Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and I will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!” — Katie

The Wicked King by Holly Black cover and my choice for Calendar Girls August 2019

TitleThe Wicked King
Author: Holly Black
Type: Fiction
Genre: YA, Fantasy
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (Hachette Book Group)
Published: January 8, 2019

Note: This book is part of a series, so there may be spoilers for a previous book/books in the synopsis below.

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.
