In Charlie Hall’s world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences—but also to increase power and influence. You can alter someone’s feelings—and memories—but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden—a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms. And sometimes, it has a life of its own.

Charlie is a low-level con artist, working as a bartender while trying to distance herself from the powerful and dangerous underground world of shadow trading. She gets by doing odd jobs for her patrons and the naive new money in her town at the edge of the Berkshires. But when a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie’s present life is thrown into chaos, and her future seems at best, unclear—and at worst, non-existent. Determined to survive, Charlie throws herself into a maelstrom of secrets and murder, setting her against a cast of doppelgängers, mercurial billionaires, shadow thieves, and her own sister—all desperate to control the magic of the shadows.

⤖ My Review ⬻

I’ve been reading Holly Black’s work since I was a teen, starting with the Tithe series, and I’ve been hooked ever since. So, it should come as no surprise that when I heard she was working on her adult debut novel, Book of Night, I just had to get my hands on a copy to read and review for you!

This being her first adult novel, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I’ve found with some authors who wander out of the YA genre into adult or other age levels, sometimes it works really well and other times I’ve found that something didn’t quite click. So while I allowed myself to feel excited about Book of Night, I also tried to keep my expectations in check.

I had also hoped that Holly Black’s first adult novel would touch on the world of faerie. But I tried to let go of that, let myself dive into Book of Night, trusting the author as I had with previous books…and it turns out that I needn’t have worried at all! I really enjoyed how she set the scene and the worldbuilding right off the bat.

I was pulled into the world and felt intrigued about the characters from the very first chapter! And there was this air of mystery around the characters, the locations, the book as a whole that I really enjoyed. I also wanted to mention that Book of Night was also a little darker, and even spooker, than I had anticipated, which was a nice surprise. All in all, I really enjoyed it and need the sequel in my hands ASAP!
