Her beginning may be our end…

Deep in the humid swamps of the Mississippi bayou, a mysterious, half-wild child is dragged just in time from the murky waters. She has no memories, no family and is covered in strange markings, the meaning of which no one is able to decipher. Adopted by the policeman who rescued her, Luce Boudrou follows him into the force, determined to prove herself in the eyes of those who are still suspicious.

However, there’s more of a battle ahead than Luce could possibly imagine. She may be an orphan without a past, but no one – including Luce herself – could ever be prepared for the truth of her dark, powerful destiny…

⤖ My Review ⬻

It took me some time to pick up Bayou Born from when I received it in the mail from the publisher due to a number of factors…the main one being that the book actually got lost until we recently moved apartments and it resurfaced! But I do believe that sometimes you simply pick up books at a certain time because you’re meant to, and I think that’s what happened with Bayou Bourn because it was exactly the read I was looking for at the time, and I really enjoyed it!

I did a combination of reading the paperback and listening to audio depending on whether I was running errands / had my hads free or not, and I have to say that I enjoyed the narrator’s acting skills. They really gave life to the characters in the audiobook.

Speaking of characters, I really liked the protagonist, Luce, as well as the people surrounding her. I have to say that this is one of my favourite found families I’ve read about. They’ve all stuck with me, including Luce of course, even now months after finishing the last page.

I got very invested in Luce’s wellbeing as well as those close to her, and I was on the edge of my seat a lot of the time when things were getting more suspenseful or action-y. I enjoyed Bayou Born so much, that I dove into the sequel, Bone Driven, right away. I’m hoping to read the third and fourth books very soon.

⤖ About the Author ⬻

Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.
