Calendar Girls (August 2018): Dog Days of Summer (Best Novel Set in Summer)

Calendar Girls is back! It has gone through some changes though. The hostesses have changed entirely from Melanie and myself, to our friends (and former Calendar Girls participants) Katie @ Never Not Reading and Adrienne @ Darque Dreamer Reads! I’m so happy that these ladies were able to adopt this monthly blog event and give it life again! If you want to learn more about Calendar Girls, please read the info below, and if you would like to know even more, please check out Katie’s or Adrienne’s info posts!

– About the Event –

Description by Katie @ Never Not Reading: Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and will now be hosted by me (!), Katie. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl. Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and I will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

Title: The Wicked Deep
Author: Shea Ernshaw
Type: Fiction
Genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal, Witches, Romance
Publisher: Simon Pulse (Simon & Schuster)
Date published: March 6, 2018

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town. Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under. Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into. Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters. But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

– My Thoughts –

I really enjoyed The Wicked Deep, and I’m very glad that it fits the qualifications for this month’s Calendar Girls prompt! I read and reviewed this book this February-March (and remember really wishing that it had been published in the summer, since I like to match the seasons in my books to the actual season outside if I can). You can read my 5 star review here, but if you don’t have the time, let me just say that I definitely recommend this dark, addictive, and atmospheric read.

THANK YOU FOR READING MY CALENDAR GIRLS POST! HAVE YOU EVER READ THE BOOK THAT I HAVE SELECTED FOR THIS MONTH’S PROMPT? IF SO, WHAT DID YOU THINK? AND IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YET, DO YOU WANT TO, OR NOT? HOWCOME? FEEL FREE TO COMMENT ANY OF YOUR THOUGHTS BELOW, WHETHER YOU’RE A CALENDAR GIRL OR NOT!

  1. OMG Flavia I just bought this one at YALC! Now I “just” have to make room in my reading schedule

  2. Flavia your blog is so beautiful! I am amazed by the design and the aesthetics! I went ahead and read your review and I am really excited to read this. The plot sounds really interesting, and I am a huge fan of dark fantasy.
