When Lore was thirteen, she escaped a cult in the catacombs beneath the city of Dellaire. And in the ten years since, she’s lived by one rule: don’t let them find you. Easier said than done, when her death magic ties her to the city.

Mortem, the magic born from death, is a high-priced and illicit commodity in Dellaire, and Lore’s job running poisons keeps her in food, shelter, and relative security. But when a run goes wrong and Lore’s power is revealed, she’s taken by the Presque Mort, a group of warrior-monks sanctioned to use Mortem working for the Sainted King. Lore fully expects a pyre, but King August has a different plan. Entire villages on the outskirts of the country have been dying overnight, seemingly at random. Lore can either use her magic to find out what’s happening and who in the King’s court is responsible, or die.

Lore is thrust into the Sainted King’s glittering court, where no one can be believed and even fewer can be trusted. Guarded by Gabriel, a duke-turned-monk, and continually running up against Bastian, August’s ne’er-do-well heir, Lore tangles in politics, religion, and forbidden romance as she attempts to navigate a debauched and opulent society.

But the life she left behind in the catacombs is catching up with her. And even as Lore makes her way through the Sainted court above, they might be drawing closer than she thinks.

⤖ My Review ⬻

Hannah F. Whitten’s novel, The Foxglove King, was a fun and engaging read that kept me on my toes. This was a relief since it was one of my most anticipated reads of the year! I was a bit concerned when I first started reading because the book read a bit like YA when I was in the mood for an adult fantasy. I’m happy to share that my first imrpression was incorrect!

The characters in The Foxglove King are well-developed and fun to get to know. I was definitely invested in their journeys and rooting for them throughout the story (while sometimes also being suspicious of them and their motives). The mystery at the heart of The Foxglove King was also well-crafted, with plenty of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end.

Another highlight of The Foxglove King was its world-building. Whitten created a rich and immersive fictional world that was fun to read about. I’m a big fan of ewll-written high fantasy cities, and reading about the city in this book was a joy.

I look forward to exploring more of the world in the next book, The Hemlock Queen. Of course this is only part of the reason I’m very much anticipating the continuation of this series. I miss the characters and their interactions, I miss the world, and I really really need to know what happens next!

⤖ About the Author ⬻

Hannah Whitten has been writing to amuse herself since she could hold a pen, and sometime in high school, figured out that what amused her might also amuse others. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, making music, or attempting to bake. She lives in Tennessee with her husband and children in a house ruled by a temperamental cat.
