Summary: London, April 1812. On the eve of 18-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall’s presentation to the Queen, one of her family’s housemaids disappears–and Helen is drawn into the shadows of Regency London. There, she meets Lord Carlston, one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of demons infiltrating every level of society. Dare she ask for his help, when his reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her intelligence and headstrong curiosity wind up leading them into a death trap?

★★★★☆

Note: This being a review of a sneak peek, it will be short and containing little detail.

The start of this book was intriguing, and the writing was good. The language used, particularly in character dialogue, is good at immersing the reader into the story, as there are no modern words or phrases used.

Alison Goodman constantly keeps in mind that the setting of her book is 1812 London, and that makes me happy! I cannot say how many times I’ve come across historical books which sound exciting, but which were then ruined for me because of the inaccurate information and vocabulary used!

Goodman’s language is clear and descriptive, and overall a pleasure to read.

I find that the excerpt which was provided, although of a good length, was not enough to catch my interest. I do want to know what will happen, but it is not a burning need to know (if that makes sense), and I am worried that the same may happen when others read the excerpt. This book could be pure gold, for all I know, but myself and others might not read the full thing because the sample does not do enough to hook us.

I will be keeping an eye out for this book the next time I make a trip to the book store, or the next time I pop onto Amazon. And I may recommend this book to those who enjoy Victorian mystery + supernatural novels.
