October Daye Series by Seanan McGuire: Books 7-10 (Multiple Bullet Point Reviews)

I finished the 12th book in the October Daye series the other day…which means that I’m all caught up now! Ah! In case this is the first October Day themed post of mine that you’ve come across, I highly recommend that you read my full-length review for the first book and my mini-reviews for books 2-6 first! This post will be laid out in the same way as the post I made for books 2-6 in that it will contain short bullet point reviews for the books. (I will be writing full-length reviews for books 11 and 12 in preparation for book 13 coming out this fall!) Thank you again to Milana @ A Couple Reads for introducing me to the very wonderful world of October Daye, and I hope that you all enjoy this post (whether you’re already an October fan or not)!

Title: Chimes at Midnight (Book 7)
Author: Seanan McGuire
Type: Fiction
Genre: Adult, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Mystery, Fae
Publisher: DAW Books, Inc. (Penguin Random House)
Date published: September 3, 2013

  • Chimes at Midnight was one of my favourite books in the series!
  • I’ve always been fascinated with goblin fruit (well, since the first time I read a book about the Fae), and loved the role it played in this book and how McGuire described it.
  • I also found that the amount of drama in this book was just right!

“Librarianship is a form of heroism. It’s just not as flashy as swords and dragons.”

― Seanan McGuire, Chimes at Midnight

Title: The Winter Long (Book 8)
Author: Seanan McGuire
Type: Fiction
Genre: Adult, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Mystery, Fae
Publisher: DAW Books, Inc. (Penguin Random House)
Date published: September 2, 2014

  • I really enjoyed this book too! We find out more about October’s past (and some of the side characters are tied to it).
  • There are also some epic twists in The Winter Long which made my jaw drop a bit (and made me just want to know more)!
  • The villains in this one also made me grind my teeth in fury.

“I don’t like parties. Someone always tries to assassinate someone I actually like, and there are never enough of those little stuffed mushroom caps.”

― Seanan McGuire, The Winter Long

Title: A Red-Rose Chain (Book 9)
Author: Seanan McGuire
Type: Fiction
Genre: Adult, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Mystery, Fae
Publisher: DAW Books, Inc. (Penguin Random House)
Date published: July 7, 2016

  • We get to experience another Fae kingdom in this book because October gets sent on a diplomatic mission, which is quite awesome!
  • Again, McGuire wrote the villains so well that I was red in the face with anger at times (which just shows me how good a writer she is).
  • I was also happy to learn about another kingdom and to find out more about October and supporting characters!

“Sometimes romance is of less importance than the feeling of being absolutely safe: of knowing that nothing and no one can hurt you, because the person who loves you most in all the world will destroy them if they try.”

― Seanan McGuire, A Red-Rose Chain

Title: Once Broken Faith (Book 10)
Author: Seanan McGuire
Type: Fiction
Genre: Adult, Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Mystery, Fae
Publisher: DAW Books, Inc. (Penguin Random House)
Date published: September 6, 2016

  • We meet some characters in this book that I’ve been dying to meet since I first learned about them earlier in the series!
  • I’m also a big fan of murder party plots! To clarify for some of you, what I mean by this is a plot that revolves around a group of people stuck in a situation, one (or more) people getting murdered, and no one being allowed to leave until the investigator (October in this case) figures out who the murderer is! So fun.
  • I dove right into the next book, The Brightest Fell, after this one, and I hope to have a full review for that one for you guys soon!

“Never invite a death omen to a murder party.”

― Seanan McGuire, Once Broken Faith

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and science fiction thrillers (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats. Seanan is the author of the October Daye, InCryptid, and Indexing series of urban fantasies; the Newsflesh trilogy; the Parasitology duology; and the “Velveteen vs.” superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly, Alice, and Thomas, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now. Seanan’s favorite things include the X-Men, folklore, and the Black Death. No, seriously. She writes all biographies in the third person, because it’s easier that way.

THANK YOU FOR READING MY OCTOBER DAYE APPRECIATION / MULTIPLE MINI REVIEW POST! HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE OCTOBER DAYE SERIES OR SEANAN MCGUIRE BEFORE THIS POST? HAVE YOU READ ANY OF THESE BOOKS, OR ARE THEY ON YOUR TBR LIST? LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS!

  1. This is my first time hearing about this series! I really liked Every Heart Is A Doorway, so I’m interested in anything by Seanan McGuire .

    1. Yaaay! I’m so glad I was able to spread the word! I haven’t read Every Heart Is a Doorway yet, but I plan to now that I’m all caught up on this series hehe

    1. Ahhh well I hope you’ll be able to pick it up soon! And I forget if you like audiobooks or not, but I love the audiobooks for this series! It helped me get through the books quicker because I could just let the audiobooks play while driving or doing the dishes or folding laundry haha

      1. I do occasionally enjoy audiobooks but I can’t listen to them on 2x speed because I don’t like the way they sound, and I read so so much faster on physical book or e-book.

          1. If I had a commute longer than 15 minutes to get to work, I’d try to listen to my audiobooks then. Oh, and my fiance has a habit of falling asleep while listening to audiobooks, so it’s not a good idea to play one if he’s driving.

I do have several lengthy fantasy books on my Audible app…like each book is 25-40 hours long, lol.
