For seventeen-year-old Fable, the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home she has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one, and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father, and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.
But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him, and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.
⤖ My Review ⬻
This book is definitely one of my top reads of 2020! I will say that getting into it took me a little while though–I just like to share that in case this happens to someone else and they don’t see a reason to push through. I recommend pushing through! I think I was around the halfway point before Fable properly hooked me! I remember chatting about Fable with some of my friends who had read it already and worrying that something was wrong with me because the book didn’t feel special to me at all.
But once Fable got its grips on me, it didn’t let go! I devoured the rest of the book in one sitting. It was so good! I’m thinking that the part of the book that I didn’t find too gripping was simply the author setting the scene for when the plot really takes off! There was adventure, romance, pining, treasure, and mystery! This might sound like a mix of elements that can be found in many books, but I will say that it’s not easy to make all of those parts work together. Adrienne Young is a very skilled storyteller and I’m so glad that the first book I read by her was Fable. I hope that you’ll get to read the sequel, Namesake, ASAP!

Great review! I’ve been wanting to read this for a while (ever since seeing that gorgeous cover, hahaha) and I’ve been seeing it all over bookstagram too. Glad you enjoyed – I feel like slow starts can happen with fantasy books set in another world, especially if it’s the first in a series. Good to know that it picks up eventually!
I hope you enjoy it when you pick it up!! And I agree that does tend to happen a lot more often with high fantasy
