Calendar Girls (#4 / April 2017): Best High Fantasy

Thankfully March moved a little slower than February, even though it had only a few extra days. I am looking forward to May, but I’m also NOT looking forward to June, so it’s a constant struggle for me between wanting time to move faster or slower. I also don’t like aging, soooo maybe slower is the better option, haha. What about you guys?! But anyway, back to Calendar Girls!

For those of you new to Calendar Girls, it’s a new blog event which I am co-hosting with my friend Melanie, and is inspired by Neil Sedaka’s 1961 song Calendar Girl. Just like in the song, we decided to use a specific theme for each month and choose a book based on these themes! The event is meant to incite discussions with other bloggers about books we’ve read and loved, is meant to help bloggers meet other bloggers, and also for bloggers and readers to find out about blogs which they normally may not have come across!

Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind

I would normally pick a Tolkien book or this category, but as I mentioned in last month’s post, I already chose one for the April theme! Now, I know some of you may have seen me mention this book or series a few times, and you might be sick of it, but it really is one of my favourites! I love the first book (the one above) the most, although the series as a whole (except for the ending trilogy…which ended up not being an ending at all, because Goodkind couldn’t stop writing about the characters and the world, and I don’t blame him…) is one of my favourites. Many of the characters will remain with me (and have already done so for years and years, since I was in high school when I finished this series), and the setting, as well as the magic will stay with me as well. I actually ended up making two role play boards using the world and magic system from these books (with a disclaimer of course), back in the day when I used to role play, and it was a lot of fun.

But what about all of you?! Which high fantasy book and/or series is the best for you?!

    1. That’s still pretty awesome! I have still not made it through the first book haha….it’s so dense…and I know what happens. But SOMEDAY!

  2. I hate to say it but I totally thought I would see Tolkien up there. XD Is it possible to go through all of the Calendar Girls posts and not find a Tolkien? :O Anyway, I haven’t read this one either, but anything that can aspire two role replaying games must be good. But that does sound like a horrible way to end the series by not ending it at all. Wonderful post, and even though I don’t know the choice, it does sound like a perfect fit!

    1. Haha yeah like I said I would have TOTALLY put down Tolkien, but I’d already picked a Tolkien book for last month’s them so I couldn’t bring myself to choose Tolkien AGAIN. And thanks so much for your comment! Yes, it really is a great series….and it DID end….just not for very long, because he picked everything up again a few years later, haha. It’s confusing to me, and I haven’t read any of the books that came after the “last one”….so I’m not sure how he went about explaining what he did and why…

  3. I loved Wizard’s First Rule when I was in high school. I reread it in college, and it unfortunately just didn’t hold up for me. My favorite high fantasy series would have to be The Witches of Eileanan by Kate Forsyth.

    1. Yay another Wizard’s First Rule fan! Yeah I read the first book maybe 5 times in high school, but I haven’t picked it up to try again SINCE then….so I’m not sure how that would go for me, haha. It is a series that is dear to me though 🙂

      And oooh I will have to check that series out!

    1. I would say definitely start with Wizard’s First Rule! It’s the first book, and although there is a 0.5, it won’t make sense and may contain spoilers if you read it before like book 5 or so. 🙂 I hope you get to try it out soon and that you enjoy it when you do!

  6. Oh my gosh, I LOVE The Sword of Truth series. I read the first…maybe ten…and then life got busy, reading was put to the way side, it’s on my TBR for this year to read the entire series from the beginning (and own them). He’s one of my favourite authors. I also love Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, and have enjoyed the first two books for Game of Thrones series.

    1. Ahhhh that happened with my friend as well. Plus she heart her sister and myself complain about the ending, hahaha. He is a very good author though! I just don’t think that he gave the series the not-ending it deserved, haha. And yes, I read most of the Robert Jordan series in high school as well! But then stopped at the Winter one because I got bored 🙁 I may try reading that one, and the ones that came after, again someday.

      And I’m glad that you enjoy GoT! I love the TV show, but haven’t been able to finish reading the first book yet haha

        1. Ahhhh yes they are all quite long! Except for the third book hehe…which I wasn’t the biggest fan of. And I need to read War & Peace one of these days!

  8. Oh my gosh! I love that you brought up roleplay for this book because that’s sooo awesome! My very first time roleplaying was totally based off a book, too. (though it was about cats, instead of high fantasy! HAHAHA!) I always loved high fantasy boards, but they could get very complex with the variety of species and worlds and goodness knows the scandals people would make. WOO! Hahaha!

    Great pick! I’ll have to look into this as I apparently don’t read as much high fantasy as I thought I did. (I truly am a horrible book blogger and a horrible host for this since my choices are so limited. :p)

    1. So I totally responded to this in my head but never in actuality. -_- go me. And yes it was such a fun roleplay too! People who’d never read the books joined and had such a fun time too! And I don’t know if you’ll like the series, haha, but maybe! It’s very adult, and I read it when I was like 14 hahaha. I never read YA back then. Too funny.

      And you’re not a horrible blogger OR host! Haha.
