#ARCstravaganza (#5): The Tiger’s Watch by Julia Ember

Happy Monday! (Or at least it’s as happy for all of you as it is for me). And I’m sorry that this post is going up so late! My weekend was kind of insane, and while I usually try to prep posts a few days in advance, or on the weekend if I can’t find time for the former option, things have been kind of nuts since last Monday anyway. However, here it (finally) is! I also had to do some debating on whether I should keep my original ARC choice for this week or not, since the review for it also went up on my blog today! Bad planning is bad. Flavia is a bad blogger. Haha. But, I decided that I really want to feature this book anyway, so I apologize if any of this feels / sounds repetitive. It is my belief that this book, and others like it, need recognition and also need to be discussed!

I also have a bit of news for you (in the case that you have no read my previous #ARCstravaganza post). While this meme was created by Krysti at YA and Wine, and hosted by her, and Sarah at The Clever Reader, due to personal circumstances they have had to let it go. For part of last Monday some of us were saying our goodbyes to #ARCstravaganza, and I for one was quite sad to no longer be able to participate in such a fun meme. But then Krysti came to its rescue when she asked me if I wanted to take over the meme! And here we are.

For those of you unfamiliar with #ARCstravaganza, it’s a meme meant to encourage book bloggers to show off and discuss their ARCs (advanced reader copies)! If this sounds like something for you, please check out the info page about the meme here.

I sadly will be unable to host a giveaway for participants every month (since I simply don’t have the means), but what I can do is provide the opportunity for extra points in the Rafflecopter giveaways which I host together with publishers! I will update you guys if I end up being able to host giveaways to go with this meme in the future! Another change is that #ARCstravaganza participants can share their posts on their blogs, Instagram, or Twitter (or all three)! Please just be sure to tag your social media posts with the hashtag, or share a link to your blog post on my blog post for each week.

So as to avoid rambles, please check out the review for this book, which I also posted today! If you want to skip that, though, I have provided the book info below, and a summary. Also, just know that I think this book is very important regarding the discussion around gender. The main character and narrator, Tashi, is gender fluid, and I found this to be very eye-opening and educational. If any of you are also gender fluid, I would love to hear your opinions on the book, and the matter of gender fluidity in general! I am very interested, and as I am not gender fluid myself, always want to learn more and let those to whom the “label” (for lack of a more suitable word) actually applies speak out about it.

Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Tashi has spent their life training as a inhabitor, a soldier who spies and kills using a bonded animal. When the capital falls after a brutal siege, Tashi flees to a remote monastery to hide. But the invading army turns the monastery into a hospital, and Tashi catches the eye of Xian, the regiment’s fearless young commander.

Tashi spies on Xian’s every move. In front of his men, Xian seems dangerous, even sadistic, but Tashi discovers a more vulnerable side of the enemy commander—a side that draws them to Xian.

When their spying unveils that everything they’ve been taught is a lie, Tashi faces an impossible choice: save their country or the boy they’re growing to love. Though Tashi grapples with their decision, their volatile bonded tiger doesn’t question her allegiances. Katala slaughters Xian’s soldiers, leading the enemy to hunt her. But an inhabitor’s bond to their animal is for life—if Katala dies, so will Tashi.
