Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo Readalong (Discussion 2: Chapters 15-30)

Wow. The holidays really took me by surprise this year. First off, finishing a project for work took longer than expected, so my Winter break started later than I expected. Then … just … Christmas happened. Errands, buying gifts, wrapping gifts, meeting people, and just being all over the place … everywhere but in front of my computer, basically. This discussion post is therefore quite late, due to that reason, and I apologize for that! As it turns out, most participants became quite busy as well, so this delay might work out for the best. To see what we thought of chapters 15 to 30, continue reading! (And beware of spoilers, if you have not read Six of Crows yet!)

Retrieve a hostage

Survive long enough to collect his reward
(and spend it)

Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.

  13. How do you feel about Jesper and Wylan?

– MY ANSWERS –

  1. I finished the book some weeks ago, so I won’t answer the 2nd question, but as for the first one … I remember being frustrated that he was angry with Nina, when she was obviously so happy to see and save him from the prison.
  2. I’m not sure! Like … he does provide comic relief, which is very good, but otherwise, I don’t really feel attached to him, and I’m not sure why.
  3. I found it immensely frustrating, because neither of them said what they meant! They obviously both care for each other, but are too scared to admit it out loud.
  4. Definitely! Despite his gruff exterior, I have a feeling that he has a very gentle and good side to him. Being a Romanian who lives outside of Romania, I also understand that painful feeling when one sees their homeland again after a long absence.
  5. Bardugo did a good job in this regard. I was definitely kept on my toes, and never knew what Matthias would do or not do.
  6. I was really disgusted, and wanted all of Fjerda to burn. But at the same time … I love their relationship with nature and the wolves, and I love Matthias. I’m conflicted!
  7. I understood why they wanted to do it, but was also angry because they planned to betray the group!
  8. That scene juts made me love him more, and also love Inej more for how she handled him.
  9. Not really! His mid definitely works differently from how mine works, haha.
  10. Yes! I kept yelling at her to stop what she was doing and just focus on the mission!
  11. I thought she’d make it up, although with difficulty. I had Tante Heleen. Aaand I’m happy that she found focus and determination, but was annoyed that it would take her away from Kaz! Ah!
  12. I think Kaz definitely killed him!
  13. I think they’d make a cute couple, but am not sure if that’s where it’s going. I don’t really feel close or connected to either of them, sadly.
  14. I’m actually worried that she won’t, and that Kaz will go back for her, and that someone or someones will die.

  1. Having read the entire duology, I don’t feel like trying to answer most of these questions is a good idea. I would be so worried about possibly spoiling things for people. But I will say that I love how it takes time to get closer to some of the characters. I think that Bardugo masterfully handles the character development, and that it absolutely continues into Crooked Kingdom. Honestly for the people reading this for the first time, in some ways I am jealous, because you won’t really have to wait for a release to finish the duology. In regards to Fjerda, and specifically your answer to that question, Flavia, I totally understand how you feel. Obviously we are supposed to be upset and frustrated about the situation and not be pleased with Fjerda, but I think as with reality, though some countries do awful things, there are some aspects to be admired, such as Fjerda’s care of nature and their relationship with the wolves.

    1. I totally get that! I would be scared of spoiling things too if I’d read the entire duology.

I definitely also enjoyed that we got to learn about each character through bits and pieces. Sure, it was frustrating at times, because I wanted to know everything about all of them, right away. But looking back, I find that I do appreciate the manner in which Bardugo told us about each of them.

Haha I understand that jealousy so much! The wait between books really kills me. I also get jealous when I see someone reading a book that I loved for the first time, haha. Nothing beats that first read!

  2. 1. At first, I didn’t know what was wrong with him. He was being so crazy and horrible to a girl who was trying to rescue him! But then when they described how they met and what happened, I felt sorry for him and I understood why he acted that way.
    2. I feel sorry for Jesper. He’s had to hide who he is for so long. Perhaps if he was able to use his powers, he would become stronger, like Alina in the Grisha trilogy.
    3. I kept expecting something to happen between them! It’s so obvious that he loves her, so I hope he figures it out and makes a move soon!
    4. Yes, I think he was a little misunderstood and he isn’t as cruel as he’s portrayed, so I did feel sorry for him when he saw his home again.
    5. Even though I think he’s misunderstood, I think he will betray the group at the first chance.
    6. That scene was hard to read. They are a cruel people who just think they can use their power to dominate other people. It reminded me of a James Baldwin story I had to read in my American Literature class where he described the burning of slaves. That story was very vivid so it was difficult to read, just like this scene.
    7. I was surprised that they made that pact. I thought she was on Kaz’s side. It will be interesting to see what Kaz does if they betray him like that.
    8. Kaz’s past is so sad!! I wish he would open up more and show his vulnerability, because I think his pain will build up and explode one day.
    9. I thought Kaz’s plan would go perfectly, with maybe one or two twists. I never expected that absolutely everything would go wrong!
    10. Yes, I was frustrated with Nina searching the cells, but I was more frustrated that Kaz left her like that.
    11. My heart was pounding during that part. I was so scared for her! That scene was so intense.
    12. I think he killed him. And now that we know his past, I can totally understand why! I was shocked to learn the truth of their relationship!!
    13. I’m so curious about Wylan’s past. I think they make a funny pair, especially when Wylan started singing the national anthem to distract the guards and save Jesper.
    14. I really have no idea. Every time I think I can predict what will happen, I end up being wrong! I wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t make it back in time, but then again I want to see her relationship with Kaz grow, so I have no idea what will happen!

    1. 1. Yeah for sure! I had a change of heart about him too once I knew what had actually gone down between him and Nina. I was so mad at her! Grrrr.

      2. Oh that’s true! I forgot that about Jesper. I think that I’d probably hide my powers too. The Fjerdans are simply terrifying.

      7. Yeahhh that pact made me angry, cause I wanted the group to become a group of tightly-knit friends …and 2 people betraying the other 4 definitely wouldn’t help bring that about, haha. But at the same time, I was glad that they were on the same side about something? Oh the confusion of feelings!

      8. Yeeees I hope that Kaz opens up to Inej or SOMEONE before he blows up.

      10. All the frustration! That part was quite intense.

      12. Yeahhh what Pekka Rollins did to Kaz and his brother is unforgivable!

      13. Yes! I love the part where Wylan sings the anthem. I actually giggled!

      14. Haha right?! I love how unpredictable the book is so far! It bugs me when I can guess what will happen hehe.
