Renegades by Marissa Meyer (Calendar Girls Readalong Announcement Post & Sign-Up)

RENEGADES readalong post banner final VERSION 3 B.png

Welcome to the third Calendar Girls readalong! If this is the first time that you’re hearing (or rather, reading) about Calendar Girls, you can find out more about the blog event here. But basically, it’s an event that we my co-host, Melanie and myself, host once a month, and included in the event is a monthly Twitter chat, and also a readalong to go along with the month’s pre-chosen theme! Since November’s theme is “Best End of a Series,” and it would have been close to impossible to find a book at the end of a series that everyone happens to have been following was impossible, we decided to do a theme-less readalong this month. Also, due to panicking at the thought of adding another book to my reading list for November, I decided to simply share the books I was already planning to read as options, and you all voted (Calendar Girls through the private poll, as well anonymous voters in a poll that I threw up on Twitter)…and here we are! If you have any questions at all, please leave them in the comments below, or contact me privately through my Contact page, or  by DMing me on Twitter (@flavbibliophile)!

And now….for that book that the majority voted for…

And the book that we shall be reading together in November…

*drum roll*

Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies—humans with extraordinary abilities—who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice—and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.

I wasn’t too sure about whether I wanted to give this book a try at first, because I’d never really had good experiences with books and TV shows featuring superheroes and super powers. I loooove superhero movies, especially the more recent Marvel ones, and my favourite is the Wonder Woman movie that came out this year. When it comes to TV shows though, I’m not so lucky. I was really into Misfits for the first 2 seasons or so, but then hated where it went from there. I also got really into Heroes, but then stopped watching when I found out that’d it’d been cancelled and I’d be left without knowing what happens next. Book-wise, I tried the Zeroes series by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan, and Deborah Biancotti, and it really wasn’t for me.

I don’t know if Renegades will have outfits like this, haha, but I kind of had to use this GIF anyway!

But I told myself that there might still be a superhero book out there that I might enjoy, and I absolutely adore Marissa Meyer, so I wanted to give Renegades a try! P.S. it helps that I’ve heard nothing but good things!

I know that I’m putting this post up a bit early, but I found that some people needed more time to get their hands on a copy of the book! So I’ll just put it up now and give everyone who doesn’t own the book, but wants to participate, time to buy it or borrow it from their library! For convenience sake, here are some purchase links as well: Amazon.ca | Amazon.com | Amazon.co.uk | Amazon.com.au | IndigoThe Book Depository

Also, those who have read the book are welcome to join! Just please be sure to be aware of which parts of the book we’re on for each discussion, so as to avoid spoiling future chapters for those reading the book for the first time (and of course, please no spoilers in general!)

For those of you interested in participating in this readalong, I would please ask that you sign up using the form below! (Note: The newsletter will go out on Fridays, the days before the discussion posts go up (Saturdays))

  1. I’m not going to officially sign up for this on account of NaNoWriMo, but if I get my copy of Renegades and find the time to read it, I may jump into some of the discussion question posts.
