Summary: Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic.  For humans, it’s an unforgiving place, especially if you’re poor, orphaned, or female. Amani Al’Hiza is all three.  She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.

Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she’s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she’d gallop away on mythical horse—or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

This book sounds amazing!

The world-building was great, and the characters believable. I felt as if I was there the whole time, watching everything. The world-building was subtle too, just a few descriptions here, a few descriptions there, which then worked together to paint the whole picture. Dustwalk sounds like a real place, and I almost started feeling thirsty while reading about it.

The characters were well-rounded, even in the excerpt I was given to read, and it made me want to know them better. I also want to know what will happen with them.

The writing was very good, very steady, and it never broke the spell which it had put on me from the very first word. I was very disappointed when I ran out of words to read!

This book could be enjoyable for teens, young adults, and adults alike, and I know that I personally cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of this book.

Highly recommended!
