I’ve been wanting to make a post like this for some time, and I finally said “heck, let’s jsut do it!” Even if no one ends up reading it, I know that I’ll have fun compiling this post, cause it’ll make me re-experience some of my favourite kdramas (at least a little bit)! I’ve been watching kdramas for maybe 10 years now? So, my list will contain some good oldies, as well as some good newer ones. Please keep in mind that I have not watched any dramas since I got back from Korea and Japan in June, so please don’t mad if some of the dramas didn’t make it on the list! Plus, this is a very personal top 10! I am in no way claiming that these should be everyone’s top 10 Korean dramas. Also, I will be counting backward from 10 to 1, so as to keep my favourite kdrama of all time a surprise for the end! Okay. Let’s dive in!

Queen In Hyun’s Man (2012)

Dramafever synopsis: Ji Hyun Woo and Yoo In Na star in a fantasy historical drama about a man whose loyalty survives three centuries of time travel and helps him find the woman of his dreams.

My thoughts: I really really loved this one! My sister and I devoured it. Before this, I wasn’t the biggest fan of time travel, or over-lapping time periods. But this drama was done so well, and the romance was just on point! The chemistry between the female and male lead was also super intense (and the actors actually started dating after this drama stopped filming, hehe, so a lot of the attraction was real too!) I’m hoping to re-watch this one with my bestie very soon! It might also help warm her up toward historical Korean dramas? Since it’s half half…but we’ll see! I do recommend this one for those who have seen kdramas with modern settings, and maybe want to get a taste of what historical dramas might be like! It can also work the other way, for those who have only seen historical kdramas, and want to get a taste of what modern-setting dramas might be like.

The Moon that Embraces the Sun (2012)

Dramafever synopsis: Set in the Joseon dynasty, two brothers find themselves falling in love with a female shaman, who does not remember her noble past.

My thoughts: This drama was amazing! Definitely my favourite historical kdrama too. The costumes were impeccable, the colours of the outfits, and everything else on set, were just vibrant. The action was impeccable, and the script…gush! The plot was very dramatic, and even though I cried quite a bit, I loved every minute of it. I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy historical dramas, and maybe those who want to foray into watching historical dramas.

Goblin (2016)

Dramafever synopsis: A fabled “goblin” attempts to end his life by marrying a human priestess, but things get complicated when he starts to actually fall for her, and in turn, finds a new reason for wanting to stay alive.

My thoughts: This is another great one for those who have watched modern kdramas and want to get a taste for what a historical Korean drama might be like, and vice versa! This drama really exceeded all of my expectations. The script, the casting, the setting, the cinematography…just…gah. It was so so good! I also liked that this is mostly a drama, but that it also contained scenes which made me fall out of my chair, laughing! (You can read my full gush review here!)

Sensory Couple (2015)

Dramafever synopsis: Can a girl with heightened senses and a man with almost none, figure out the mystery behind the barcode murders?

My thoughts: (Sorry, I couldn’t find a trailer with English subs anywhere for this one! But the trailer is kind of straight forward I think, especially paired with the synopsis hehe.) I wasn’t sure what to expect from this one, and mainly put it on because no other dramas were really calling to me at the time…but I’m so glad that I decided to watch this! Obviously, haha. It made it onto my top ten as number 7! I didn’t think that there would be chemistry between the main couple, but there was so much chemistry! This drama made me happy. It was the perfect mix of murder mystery, romance, and comedy! If my bestie and I don’t watch Queen In Hyun’s Man next, I kind of hope that we watch this one!

A Gentleman’s Dignity (2012)

Dramafever synopsis: Four men with complicated love lives refuse to admit they’re getting older, and attempt to prove that forty is the new thirty!

My thoughts: (Again, I’m sorry I couldn’t find a trailer with English subs! What is going on? Anyway, the synopsis should make it clear though, haha.) I’ve seen this drama twice, or three times, now (once with my parents, once with my sister, and once with my bestie)! The cast is a bit older than the casts in the dramas I usually watch, but don’t let that scare you off! This drama was such a fun romcom (I mean obviously, since I’ve seen it so many times.

It’s Okay, That’s Love (2014)

Dramafever synopsis: Ji Hye Soo’s life is completely turned around after meeting a mysterious and obsessive radio DJ.

My thoughts: Um, wow this synopsis doesn’t really give you anything, eh? The trailer should indicate that this was a romcom as well though! Despite having a lot of moments that made me burst out laughing, I loved that this drama also tackled subjects such as sex, mental health, and other serious subjects as well, since I had not encountered a kdrama that had done this before It’s Okay, That’s Love! The cast is also a bit older in this one, but don’t let that throw you off! The soundtrack is also super fun! This is another drama that I really want my bestie to watch with me so that I can re-experience it!

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (2017)

Dramafever synopsis: A freakishly strong, but totally sweet girl is caught between the love for her arrogant, yet gorgeous boss, and her handsome but disinterested childhood crush.

My thoughts: Well, that synopsis makes it sound as if this drama is all about a love triangle…and it’s really not! Sigh. Yes, there is a love triangle, and it’s part of the plot, but there’s so much more going on! First of all, I really adored the female lead in this one (which almost never happens for me). The actor who played the male lead is a new fave of mine, and the male lead character himself is also one that I really enjoyed! I loved that the girl was the physically strong one in this one, and how she beat bad guys up left, right, and centre! The comedy was also great, and I burst out laughing a lot! Like, a lot! The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince (2007)

Dramafever synopsis: Arguably the most popular and talked about Korean drama of 2007.

My thoughts: Holy moly! That is not a synopsis at all, is it?! Basically, the female lead pretends to be a guy so that she can work for this attractive, rich guy, and she falls for him, and he falls for her, but he thinks she’s a guy….She’s caught in her own lie and complications arise. I love love love this drama! Don’t let the fact that it’s older throw you off! Yes, it looks and feels older, but it’s such a classic! I’ve seen this one 5-6 times! Yes. That’s how much I love it!

Healer (2014)

Dramafever synopsis: A star broadcast reporter discovers the truth of a long forgotten incident, forcing him to struggle between truth and faith.

My thoughts: Um, said star broadcast reporter is not even the main character! Sigh. Okay, it’s up to me again. The male lead is this like a messenger for the underworld, and as you can see in the trailer, he’s very good at his job and the action stuff! The female lead is a reporter (not said star reporter) who’s trying to make it big, and somehow crosses paths with said messenger. Finally, the star reporter also gets involved in the mix, and we have an awesome romance (seriously, one of my faves), and a conspiracy that needs to be uncovered and revealed to the world! I love this drama so so much, and actually finished re-watching it with my bestie yesterday! I’ll probably watch it a few more times throughout my lifetime too, hehe!

Reply 1997 (2012)

Dramafever synopsis: In the height of k-pop in 1997, five teenage friends go through the trials of first loves and heartbreak, with kpop and their idols always there waiting for them.

My thoughts: This one always stays at the very top for me! I don’t know what it is! Maybe it’s the fangirl culture, mixed with the intense romance, and learning about what Korea was like in 1997? I just really clicked with the female lead, Shi Won, maybe because we’re both fangirls? Maybe because we’re both silly and clumsy? Who knows? Anyway, I recommend this one to those who have already watched kdramas before, and not so much people who want to start watching kdramas, because this is not what the majority of kdramas are like (stylistically), and I don’t want people to watch it, love it, and then feel strangely toward other kdramas. I also don’t want people to watch it, dislike it and then expect all kdramas to be like that, and refuse to watch more of them because of this! Anyway, this is definitely a romcom that made me laugh a lot, and I’ve watched it 3-4 times, and will ikely re-watch it sometime soon! (Also, while I really liked Reply 1994, and Reply 1988 as well, you can see that I didn’t like them enough to add them to my top 10! But that doesn’t mean they were bad! They still made me laugh a lot!)
