Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger: Film Tie-In by Stephen King (Giveaway) [Closed]

the-dark-tower-i-9781501168369_hrIs anyone else excited for the film release of the first Dark Tower movie? Because I know that I sure am! While I have never read the books, I always found that something drew me to them whenever I saw them at a book store. I would always stop and look the books over, especially once they were being sold in a box set. One of my local book stores had a really good sale on the box set of all of the Dark Tower books, and now I really regret not going for it! Anyone else have moments like that? I’ve been meaning to read Stephen King for years! But because in my head I knew him as an author of some of the most frightening horror stories on earth, I kind of avoided all of his books in stead. This series might change that for me though!

I’m the kind of person that enjoys the jump scares, and adrenaline rush of horror films, but then regrets watching them later, when sleep is impossible due to dark corners, and strange sounds in the night. Therefore, I was more than a little scared to dive into one of King’s books. This series though, sounds to me like more of a dark fantasy, with hints of sci-fi, a dash of horror, and a bit of a Western, and this sounds like a good (and not-nightmare inducing) mix to me. I will likely read through this series, and then read every other Stephen King book on the planet, because that’s just how I am. Like a shark that scents blood in the water, except I scent horror, and it doesn’t mean food for me but wide-eyed, covers-up-to-the-chin, fear.

But enough of my rambles, and on to the good stuff! Here is the trailer for the film adaptation based upon the first book in the Dark Tower series:

And here is the Goodreads synopsis for the book that started it all:

‘The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.’ The iconic opening line of Stephen King’s groundbreaking series, The Dark Tower, introduces one of his most enigmatic and powerful heroes: Roland of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger. Roland is a haunting figure, a loner, on a spellbinding journey towards the mysterious Dark Tower, in a desolate world which frighteningly echoes our own. On his quest, Roland begins a friendship with a kid from New York named Jake, encounters an alluring woman and faces an agonising choice between damnation and salvation as he pursues the Man in Black.

The books sound great, and I think that Idris Elba will be amazing in this film (not that he ever isn’t amazing!) The film also looks as if it will be quite visually stunning as well. So, are any of you as excited for the books (whether you’ve read them or not), and the film release as I am? Well, Simon & Schuster Canada and I have a treat for you! One lucky winner from Canada will received a paperback copy of Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger: Film Tie-In by Stephen King! I was sent a copy for review purposes, and let me tell you, the cover looks fantastic, and the length of the novel is considerably shorter, and less daunting than I’d expected! I really hope to be able to read this book soon and share my review with you guys.

  1. I read your post while nodding my head up & down the entire time! LOL! I’ve been meaning to read Stephen King for years but for the same reasons you gave I haven’t. I really do value my sleep haha! This series & his Bill Hodges trilogy are at the very top of my TBR, maybe even this Fall I’ll take the leap *fingers crossed* The movie looks like it will be AMAZING, still trying to book a sitter for date night though lol. I hope you enjoy the book & movie Flavia 🙂

    1. Haha I totally just pictured you doing that! I’m glad that I’m not alone in my reasons behind not reading Stephen King yet, and I hope that we will both decided to just read some of his work and see for ourselves what it’s all about! I’ll have to check out this Bill Hodges trilogy, since I’ve never heard about it, haha. I hope that you’ll be able to book a sitter and watch this movie soon! I may go see it tonight! 😉

  2. I am so excited! Hoping to see them this weekend! Stephen King was actually here last year, and he’s actually hilarious and pretty humble, so I want to support anything he does now. Not that he even kind of needs my support. LOL.

    1. I hope that you were able to go see it on the weekend! I was planning to as well, but things just got way too busy. Maybe I’ll go tonight 😉 but we shall see. And ah! You’re so lucky to have been able to meet him! I’m quite jealous! And I’m sure he doesn’t NEED our support, but he probably does still appreciate it 😀

      1. We were, and I really liked it! Did you get to see it yet? I think he just came here, because James Dashner lives here, and they’re friends. So we got lucky for sure! He’s so nice in person. Definitely the type of author to appreciate the support. 🙂

  3. I read a few of the Dark Tower graphic novels back in grad school. I’ve also read The Colorado Kid and On Writing. I’ve wanted to read The Gunslinger for a while and haven’t yet fit it into my reading schedule. My copy is just sitting on the bookshelf waiting on me, lol.

      1. I found out about them in grad school and borrowed a few from a friend.

I have been reading so many books lately, trying to fit in all my galleys, ARCs and some fun reads. My TBR pile still hasn’t gotten any smaller. Book nerd problems, right? lol.

  4. I was also afraid of reaching for any
Stephen King novels for exactly the same reason… and am also tempted by the excellent Dark Tower trailer – could you read it and give assurances that there are survivors and it’s not too scary?

  5. I read the books in high school and I remember being so confused! I think it would definitely be different reading them now, obvs cause I’m a grown ass woman now, but I’m so interested to see what you would think of the series!! Cause if you said it was worth revisiting I just might do that.

I may see this movie just because Idris Elba is seriously the best!!

    1. Ahhh I have books like that as well! But haven’t had the time to re-read any of them. Too many books, such little time. I will definitely be posting a review once I read this book though 😀

I will definitely be seeing the movie as well, though I really hope that it won’t turn me off from reading the book (which is generally what happens when I see the movie first, haha)

  6. I love Stephen King, I have not read this series yet, but I plan on it after I finish his Mr. Mercedes one (great so far already though half of it). It is funny because when I was younger about 10 or so I loved horror movies like The Shinning, Pet Cemetery and Creep Show and had no idea they were based on his novels or written by him. When I finally realized I was so mad at myself for not realizing it sooner.

    1. Oh, I’ve heard great things about Mr. Mercedes! I actually bought it for my sister’s boyfriend last Christmas, and full intend to borrow it once I have time to read it, hehe. Ahhh this happened to me about many things as well! Have you watched Stranger Things at all? It’s supposed to be like an ode to Stephen King 😉

  7. I haven’t read a lot of his books, but the ones I have are iffy for me. I read The Mist before it came out in theatres, and I still rage over the ending change. The book’s ending was much more satisfying.

Unfortunately this movie hasn’t gotten a lot of praise, but I’m interested in seeing it though.
