my-banner-w-links-switched

This month we decided to follow the publishing trend by immersing ourselves in Fairytale Retellings! Unfortunately, because this is such a popular choice right now among publishers and readers, there are a LOT of retellings to choose from, but you lovely ladies didn’t disappoint with your choices. Speaking of choices, let’s get into the nominees! (If this is your first time hearing about Calendar Girls and are interested in finding out more, you can read my info page about the blog event here!)

Woah! So many choices, both well-known and those needing a little love from some amazing book bloggers. This is such an awesome list and Melanie and I loved how many different fairytales were represented this month and how so many different genres were also represented! It goes to show fairytale retellings can be fun reads for every reader, wouldn’t you agree?

By the way, if you haven’t had the chance to comment and discuss with other Calendar Girls about their pick, you can go and do so now. Just click a book cover or link above and it will take you right to that blogger’s post where you can leave a comment! Remember: It’s never too late to discuss books!

– Most Popular Pick –

Holy woah! So many choices to pick from this month! Thank you to everyone who voted in the July poll! It was a pretty close pick, but there was still a unanimous winner for ‘Best Fairytale Retelling!’

And without further ado, here is the winner by popular vote…

*drum roll*

Fairytale retellings have been taking the world by storm in the last few years. So much so that they’ve become the trend in YA fiction, which means there is no shortage of books to choose from. However, there is one that I do believe every reader has at least heard of, and that’s Cinder by Marissa Meyer. No wonder it was the most popular choice for Best Fairytale Retelling!

If you haven’t heard about it yet, though, Cinder is a fantastic take on the age-old fairytale of Cinderella. But the best part is: leave what you know about a glass slipper and magical fairy godmothers behind. This is a brand new take that thrusts us squarely into the realm of sci-fi! Complete with androids, robots, and a dash of space opera, it’s a unique story that still stays true to the original and has swept up the hearts and minds of many YA readers. Perhaps if it sounds interesting to you, it’s time to give it a shot too if you haven’t already!

– #CGBChat –

On Sunday, July 16th, some lovely ladies joined us on the hashtag to discuss fairytales, their retellings, potentially making book-specific chat groups, and Dr. Who. Wait! What was that last one? Hahahaha! It was so much fun that Melanie and I couldn’t bear to cut you lovely bloggers it after just one hour, and pushed it to an hour and a half. But don’t take my word for it, check out the chat through Storify here.

Miss this month’s #CGBChat? No worries! There’s another one coming up on Sunday, August 20th at 8PM EST where we’ll be discussing historical fiction novels, their basis in actual history, and why they’re so unique! We really hope to see you there.

P.s. We have a Calendar Girls Twitter Group Chat and would love for you to join us! If you are not part of it already, tweet @NoellBernard or @FlavBibliophile to be added! Hope to see you there!

  1. Ohh I love retellings!! It sounds like it was a great reading month for everybody!! Also, I just got a copy of My Lady Jane!!!!! Which means I can do the read-a-long!!!!!!! Yay!

  2. Great choices on best fairytale retellings. Right now I think my favorite has to be Geekerella because that book was so adorable and I loved the fandom take on Cinderella. I’m excited for the readalong too, though I guess I actually still need to go out and get a copy of My Lady Jane.

    1. Yesss July was a very fun month for Calendar Girls. It seems that we all love fairytale retellings 🙂 And yes! Geekerella is just great. I loved the fandom aspect too, and I’m so happy that you’ll be joining the readalong! Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on the first discussion tomorrow 😉

      1. I sat down and read the chapters for the discussion today before work. And even being a quarter of the way into the book, I’m still on the fence about whether or not I’m interested in the book or if I like it or how I feel about it in general, lol.

        1. Uh ooooh! It did also take me a bit to get into it plot-wise, but the jokes and narrative tone kept me reading until the plot hooked me. I hope that it’ll be come more interesting for you soon 🙂

    1. Yessss I got up to the end of chapter 8 last night and it was so hard to stop reading! Luckily I’m reading like 5 books at once, so I had another book to distract myself with hahaha. Looking forward to seeing what you picked for Calendar Girls this month! (since I haven’t yet had time to make the rounds and see everyone’s posts yet!)

  3. I was reluctant to start reading r retellings when they first became big in YA (idk I guess I just didn’t think I’d like them) but I eventually read Cinder and really enjoyed it! I still haven’t continued the series but hopefully I’ll get to that one day!
I’m gonna have to search my library and see if they have a copy of My Lady Jane for me to read bc I really want to take part in this readalong!

    1. Same here! I was almost repelled by them at first. But I’m glad that I ignored that initial feeling and just dove into one…and now here I am. Haha. I really need to finish the Lunar Chronicles as well, …maybe in December….but we’ll see. And ahhh I hope that you got a copy of My Lady Jane! (goodness, I’m so behind on comments on here right now)

  4. Sorry I haven’t discussed much this month! My summer reading challenge is eating all my time but I will try and make up for it I will try and catch up on July and make sure I comment more in August. I love this event.

    1. No worries! I completely understand! I wish that I could discuss more as well (especially since I’m one of the hosts), but other blogging and real life stuff kind of take up any free time that I have! I’m so happy that you’re still a part of Calendar Girls though, despite being so busy! <3
