#ARCstravaganza (#3): The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

arcstravaganza (1).jpg

Mondays have been a lot more bearable since I started participating in #ARCstravaganza! Thank you Krysti at YA and Wine and Sarah at The Clever Reader for creating such a fun meme! #ARCstravaganza is meant for book bloggers to show off and discuss their ARCs, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it! If you think that you would have fun with this too, be sure to check out the info below, as well as Krysti’s info post about the meme! Also, I have some exciting news for all of you. Starting next week, I will actually be taking over hosting the meme! You can read Krysti’s post about why she and Sarah sadly had to stop hosting the meme here. Another update is that there will be no giveaway associated with the meme (but that may change once I have the means to host one every month), and that participants can choose to participate on their blogs, on Instagram, or on both platform types!

From YA and Wine: #ARCstravaganza is a weekly meme hosted by Krysti at YA and Wine and Sarah at The Clever Reader to give book bloggers/bookstagrammers a chance to show off those ARCs/eARCs/Galleys! Comment on their weekly posts with a link to your own #ARCstravaganza blog post, or post a pic on Instagram using the #ARCstravaganza hashtag, and you will be entered to win an ARC copy of an upcoming YA novel! One winner will be chosen at random each month!

Update: Starting next Monday, I will be taking over #ARCstravaganza! The contest portion will cease until further notice, and blog and Instagram posts will resume starting next Monday.

I know that this book is out already, and I hope that I’m not breaking any rules by using it, but I really wanted to feature it! Some of you may have seen that I’ve been kind of struggling with this book, but with this feature I hope to explain why. The reason why I am struggling is not because The Last Magician is lacking in writing quality, plot, or good characters, but rather because I’ve been busy with a variety of things and have therefore had little reading time.

On top of that, I’m in kind of a reading slump…and this book is no quick beach read! It’s a very detailed books which mixes history, fantasy, and science fiction, and it is awesome! I am hoping to have more time to bury my nose into The Last Magician this week, and I hope that none of you were turned off from reading this book because you were seeing me struggle over the past week!

Synopsis: Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

  1. It also took me longer than usual to get through The Last Magician because it’s so intricate and complex. I really enjoyed it, though! Great book to feature! 🙂

  2. EeeeeK! ARCstravaganza LIVES!!!! haha! I’m very happy this meme will continue to grow under your leadership Flavia. The torch was def passed down to one awesome bookworm! I’m actually going to post mine up in a few & I am SOOO happy you are now really enjoying The Last Magician cuz it deserves so much praise! 🙂

  3. Well I’m glad to hear that your delay in reading The Last Magician has nothing to do with the content of the book, because I thought it sounded amazing and I had to buy a copy. I’m hoping to get to it soon.

    1. I finished it the other day and it was SO SO GOOD. Definitely glad I pushed through despite my reading slump. This book actually helped me get out of the reading slump too because it just got better and better!

    1. Yaaay! I hope that you were able to participate! (as you can tell I’m very behind on getting back to those who commented on my blog, and haven’t even gotten to the ARCstravaganza comments for this week. Lol fail.)

  4. Oh, how fun is this! I don’t get many ARCs (building my presence still so haven’t bothered requesting) but if I did I would be SO down for this.

This book is on my TBR and I am so excited to read it. Deep intricate fantasies like this are my JAM. Thanks for the share – now I am MORE excited. 😀

    1. Ahhh I completely understand! I didn’t get ARCs for almost a year after I started my blog. I hope that you can join us once you do request ARCs though 🙂 and digital ARCs are good too, if you’re on NetGalley!

I finished The Last Magician the other day and it’s so good! Will be posting my 5 star review soon 😉
