13 Halloween/Spooky Movies that I’m Re-watching this October

this

Some of you may have seen me mention this blog post idea on Twitter, and some of you may be hearing about this for the very first time. Before some readers get excited that this will contain some super creepy movies, I just wanted to let you know that yes, I’ve seen movies like The Conjuring, and Insidious, etc. and while they were quite thrilling to watch (at the time), I really suffered from lack of sleep afterward! Hahaha. I will therefore likely never re-watch those! This list will contain movies with monsters, ghosts, vampires, etc. which I actually enjoy watching, and which I can sleep quite peacefully after. Haha. So, I’m very excited to share the 13 movies that I’ve been/will be re-watching this October (with those of you who decide to stick around), on this very cursed day, Friday the 13th!

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Does this one even need explaining! It’s a classic, and my sister and I love it. It’s funny, it’s silly, it has some creepy factors (although they’re nothing that would give you nightmares if you’re over the age of five), and it’s just overall great! We, in fact, already re-watched it last weekend and loved every moment of it!

Crimson Peak (2015)

freedvdcover_crimson-peak-2015-r1-custom

This movie is special to me, because while I find certain parts quite terrifying, I also see the beauty in it. The visuals are incredibly satisfying, and I normally cry from the visual delight while at the same time shivering from how creepy said visuals are! This movie is one of those that makes me happy, while also upsetting me. Yes, I have mixed emotions toward Crimson Peak hahaha.

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

interview20with20the20vampire

This is another classic! The first time I watched this, I was maybe 8 or 9 years old, and visiting my grandparents in Transylvania (haha, I know, how fitting!) I was far too young to watch such a movie, but was quite the rebellious little girl, and stuck out of the bedroom and watched it alone with super low volume after everyone had gone to bed. Haha. Looking back now, seeing Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise as vampires is kind of funny, but it’s still a movie that I enjoy watching once a year or every two years or so.

The Boxtrolls (2014)

getdvdcovers_the-boxtrolls-custom-cover-pips

Not in the least creepy, but featuring trolls….so it counts? This movie was funny, and sad, and silly, and angering. The Boxtrolls was also the type of movie that really makes you think about certain things, because (for example) the actual monsters in this film are not the trolls at all, but rather a group of humans! Sorry, that shouldn’t be a spoiler, based on the DVD cover and the trailer, haha. But anyway, I really liked the animation style of this one, and the fact that the setting was 19th century Victorian-y…ish?

Beetlejuice (1988)

max1363497157-frontback-cover

Another classic, and a Tim Burton movie, so of course it had to make the list! Well, maybe not of course…since Corpse BrideFrankenweenie, and other Burton movies didn’t make the list…But I mean, Corpse Bride really let me down for some reason. And I haven’t watched Frankenweenie yet because I can’t handle it when animals die. I’m a baby, I know. But anyway, back to Beetlejuice. This movie is funny, silly, a bit creepy, and the effects….will make you laugh, now that it’s no longer 1988, rather than jump back in fright, or stare in awe. (I used to watch the animated series as a kid though, and kind of preferred that one to the movie. But shhh, don’t tell anyone!)

Jane Eyre (2011)

jane_eyre_2011_ws_r1-front-www-getcovers-net_

I can just picture some of you kind of blinking, your heads jerking back in surprise. “Jane Eyre?! What’s wrong with you, Flavia?!” Let me explain! While the classic novel by Charlotte Brontë might not be too dark, this particular film adaptation contains some gothic elements, which I just adore. Plus Michael Fassbender…although he’s not gothic, or creepy…just dreamy. *cough* I think he makes the best Mr. Rochester ever. But, anyway, I was taught this film during grad school, and we were told that it’s gothic, so it has to be true. Hah. There.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Another Tim Burton movie. Yes, I like most of his stuff, don’t judge me! I also still like Johnny Depp (again, please don’t judge me). I like how this film mixes comic elements with horror. I also really enjoy the plot, the acting, the visuals, etc. etc. etc. I’ve watched this movie a number of times over the years, and it never gets old for me! It’s been a few years since this one, so I’m pretty excited to re-experience it this October!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)

2017-01-02_586ac93be44a5_stolzundvorurteilzombies

Yes, I know this movie wasn’t out of this world, or fantastic. I’m also not the biggest fan of zombies…but I really enjoyed the mix of Jane Austen’s style, and horror. I don’t know about the book, because I have not read it yet, but the film adaptation made me feel as if I was truly watching and adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, an the manner in which the zombies were added felt very natural! It was also awesome that the women are badass fighters, and that we of course had one of the first love-to-hate romance plots still mixed in there as well! I did not approve of the casting for Mr. Darcy, but was appeased because Mr. Bingley (Douglas Booth) was not hard on the eyes at all.

Dracula (1992)

max1365874758-frontback-cover

I’m not sure what to say about this one, except that my sister and I have watched it once a year, or twice a year, since the first time we saw it when we were younger. I had the biggest crush on Dracula (Gary Oldman) in this one when I was younger too! Gah! Obviously when he appears as a younger man, not when he’s masquerading as an old one, haha. Maybe it was that vampire magnetism, but anyway, I always cheered for Dracula (and also felt bad for him at times) in this one, and always sort of wished that Mina would just give in and get with Dracula already. He certainly had more sex appeal and brain cells than Mr. Harker (Keanu Reeves). Sigh. Oh well, we can’t always get what we want.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

dvd-cover

This movie always makes me feel so conflicted! Like, do I watch it around Christmas? Or around Halloween? Or both?! This mixed genre (or whatever you want to call it) business is very brain-muddling for me, haha. But anyway, this is another Tim Burton, and a classic, that I thoroughly enjoy no matter how many times I’ve already seen it! I will likely also be watching it again when it gets closer to Christmas too, because I’m lame, haha.

The Mummy (1999)

max1133321673-front-cover

Yes, it’s a bit strange to have this one on here. This movie always felt like more of a summer flick for me, and while I do enjoy watching it in the summer a little more, it kind of still fits into the “Halloween” category for me because there’s a mummy in it! This movie still makes me laugh, and the romance between the main female and male leads is still one of my favourites! And the dialogue?! Gush! Also…what did happen to Brendan Fraser?!

When Good Ghouls Go Bad (2001)

2127121-20160209-fsvkc8

Another TV classic, like Hocus Pocus (and sometimes those TV movies are more fun for me to watch than like big screen blockbusters, if I’m being honest. For example, The Beauty and the Briefcase is one of my favourite movies of all time!) But back to them ghouls. Just like Hocus Pocus, this TV movie is silly, with just enough creepy to make it fun!

The Addams Family (1991)

the_addams_family_1991_ws_r1-front-www.getdvdcovers.com_.jpg

I’m not sure if this one even needs explaining! I mean, it’s the Addams Family! They’re the most Halloween-worthy family around! I saw this movie when I was little, and a few times here and there, since then. I’m pretty sure that my sister and I also watched every single episode of The New Addams Family TV series that ran from 1998 to 1999! I’m super excited to re-watch this movie (out of all of them perhaps) because it’s been the longest since I’ve seen this one!

There are a few other movies that I considered putting on here, such as The Crow, but that one, for example, didn’t make it because it makes me more sad than anything. You should see me watching The Crow…I bawl my eyes out every time. The other movies didn’t make it for similar reasons, or because I just didn’t feel like watching them this year. Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed my list, and that we’ll maybe be watching some of the same movies this Halloween season!

  1. These are some cool flicks, Flavia.

This time of year I like to re-watch the old classics of the twenties and early thirties. ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Dracula’, ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘The Mummy’. For me, you cannot beat the classics.

Happy Reading and Watching, but most of all,
    Happy Halloween!
    Your pal,
    ~Icky. 🙂

    1. Thank you! 😀

Yes, I may have to dive back into the classics next year (since I signed up for all of these movies THIS October, haha)

Happy Reading and Watching to you as well! 🙂

  2. My goal for this October is to watch as many Halloween movies as I can, and this post is definitely giving me some ideas for those night where I just can’t stand a good scare. But for tonight, I just have to watch Friday the 13th in honor of today.

    1. Yay! So glad not to be alone! And yay for Sleepy Hollow! Hehe. Also, yes. The Mummy is so so good! Can’t wait to re-watch that one. I think that I would have rewatched like half of these already if my sis was home more often this month 🙁

            1. We watched When Good Ghouls Go Bad and Beetlejuice (from my list). And we also watched one that was new for all of us cause it just came out this year, Annabelle Creation :O

  3. I always watch the Halloweentown movies and Twitches, y’know the Disney Channel Halloween movies haha. I’ve never seen a lot of these, actually! I just watched Hocus Pocus for the first time about two years ago.

    1. Oooooo I need to check those out! Thanks for sharing 😉 I’m glad that you did watch Hocus Pocus though! And I hope that you get to watch some of the others soon! I’m curious to see what those who didn’t grow up with these movies think of them!

        1. Hehe yeah! I remember watching it when I was younger and not catching those jokes though! So it’s definitely a good movie for all ages!

And nope…not yet! I’ll have to add them to list 😉

        1. Ohhhh I HAVE seen The Little Vampire a few times! And before watching it the first time, my sis and I listened to the German audiobook over and over and over hahaha

    1. Yaaaay! That makes me so happy! And I’m really embarrassed now because….. I haven’t seen The Shining yet….lmao. I’m sorry! I will try to watch it soon!

  4. Love this! I wanted to see Crimson Peak when the trailer came out, but never got around to it. Your little blurb about it, makes me want to prioritize seeing it! Hopefully it will come on TV in the next few weeks *fingers crossed.*

  5. OOh Flavia you made me realize that chicken me has watched some of these spooky movies and enjoyed them!

    1. Ohhhh I’ve never seen that one! Will have to add it to my list for later this year, or next October 😉 Maybe I’ll do a 13 Movies That I’ll Be Watching For the First Time This October post next year 😉

  6. I’ve read Jane Eyre but I’ve never seen the movie. It’s gothic elements would make it a perfect October movie!!

    1. Yesss I definitely enjoy the book, the 2011 film, and the story in general all year round…but a lot more so in the Fall (and especially around Halloween hehe)! Thanks for reading and commenting! 😀

  7. Great list. I was surprised to see Eyre on the list but now I am intrigued. I need to watch the movie. For Halloween, I usually watch slasher movies such as Wrong Turn, Hills have Eyes, Halloween, Scream though I do like classics such Dracula too.

    1. Thank you! And thanks for reading! Yeah…I wouldn’t call Jane Eyre spooooky…but there are some dark moments, and some mystery. I dunno, I just like watching it this time of year 🙂

I’ll have to add like ALL of those to my to-watch list! Thanks for sharing 😉

  8. Aweeee I hope that you watch it soon! Have you ever seen Pan’s Labyrinth? Because if you have, Crimson Peak is kind of like that: beautiful and mildly terrifying. Like, I didn’t get nightmares from it, but I definitely got shivers going down my spine! Do let me know what you think if you do watch it 😀

And I’m so glad this post could help! 🙂

  9. Yeah they’re both directed by the same director, and both definitely show his influences in the way they’re aesthetically presented, as well as the level of creepiness, hehe. I hope you enjoy!
